By now, we've arrived on East Colfax Avenue. I shouldn't be saying this, but I was feeling pretty damn hungry even after having a big ass meal of seared steak and salmon fillets (and a bowl of potato soup for appetizer). There was a Rite Aid fifty feet away from us. I couldn't be more relieved, because it was an opportunity to change the mood from that serious discussion earlier.
It was then we began seeing some people walking on the sidewalks. Every speck of life who still motion at this late usually meant that they haven't figured out their routines, or that they were stripped away of the opportunities that could've gotten them a better life. By motioning lifelessly under the artificial daylight plastered in gold, these lost souls out here are freakin' desperate to survive at the cost of their leisure and family time, if they got any family to raise, that is. There were some cars speeding down the avenue, chasing themselves to their destinations. Those guys were lucky, they would see themselves home soon, and they knew so too.
"... I..." Every damn time I had to make eye contact with her, those ostentatious (don't ask me how I know that word) yellow pupils subject me to blindness. Her eyes were of snakes hissing and waving through sand, waiting for a chance to strike, or in this case, explode in anger. Despite all this, they light me up, they light me up in a sense that I know I need to get my shit together. I hate saying this, but I'm on a royal duty here to get the damsel in inner distress back home. It's fucking stupid just thinking about it.
"What is it?"
I turned to my right, facing the double-layered entrance of Rite Aid. "... I'm getting hungry. There's a pharmacy here to grab some food."
"I thought pharmacies were meant to sell prescriptions?" Her firm voice insisted in the mild wind.
I shrugged. "Some stores are more versatile than you think, the one I'm going to right now also sells common snacks."
Blaze rested a hand on her hip and waved me off in dismissal. "Very well, I'll wait out here."
I scrunched my face. Seriously? Who the hell does she think she is? Remember who's doing whom a favor here, lady.
"Don't you want to come inside with me? There might be stuff that interests you."
She tilted her head to the window. "From what I've recalled, you wanted me to keep a 'low profile', so why must I trouble myself with those cashiers in there?"
Oh crap, she's got me there. "It's still better than being seen outside by a bunch of people. It's easier to keep things under control indoors because, uh, it's a much smaller environment, I guess?"
"So do you want me to be spotted or not?"
"It's better if you're spotted by fewer people." I sighed. "Look, I got you covered, don't worry."
Face-palming, the vexed princess shook her head. "Fine. Whatever you want..." I could not help but rapidly blink at her response. It was quite amusing yet nerve-wracking at once.
We stepped into Rite Aid. From the corner of my eye, I could tell those cashiers up front with two customers were speechless. The icy air was deathly silent, too silent, to the point where I could hear stillness in action by showing no action. Their heads were locked tight as their eyes darted at us, mainly Blaze who was literally getting the customers' attention as well. The only way to avoid getting lasered like helpless bastards is to act alpha and walk out of their sight as if this is just another day in life where you're seen as the weirdo in school.
I'm a weirdo, and I don't deny that. A lot of people in college made sure I recognized that just so I can hate myself for it.
But personal matters aside, I need to get the ball rolling.
