Beep! Beep! My hand shots out from under the old quilt as it slams down on my alarm clock. I lay in my pull out bed for a minute or two before getting up to get ready. I look in my duffel bag at the little clothes I own contemplating what would meet the standard of a private school full of rich, fashionable, white kids. I decide to play it safe and wear my old beat up black leather jacket with a white tee and jeans. My hair was in its usual wavy black mess and makeup was a minimal of mascara and light eyeshadow. The total time it took me to get ready was about fifteen minutes.
I fold up the pull out bed back into the couch and put away the old quilt. With a few steps outliving room, I was in the kitchen. Nonna (Grandmother in Italian) was at the counter making a sandwich for my little brother. "Nonna, I'm fourteen. I don't need a packed lunch anymore. I'm in high school now." My brother Leo complains as he walks from the hall, across the kitchen and past me to the living room. I grab the packed lunch from the counter and thank Nonna.
Heading out the door I smack the back of Leo's head. "What was that for?" He yells at me as he rubs his head.
"Don't disrespect Nonna like that. She was kind enough to take us in after what happened. Plus Nonna and I work hard getting food on the table so be grateful." We walk over to my 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. She was Nonna's late husbands "work in progress" that has been sitting in the car port since I was little.
As we pull up to Meadow Ridge High, it looked expensive. Nice new cars and a few super cars line the parking lot. Leo stares out the window in amazement. As soon as I parked my rust bucked that I was able to built from scrap parts, Leo jumps out and heads straight for the door.
I feel eyes on me. Making sure my arms are covered I pull my jacket tighter across my body. My beat up vans hit the pavement with grace as I move to the door. Just like any school I received my schedule and a basic map of the school then headed to my first class.
The eyes still followed as I walked down the hall. I turn a corner and shoulder check someone causing her to grab my arm to stop me. "Who the hell do you think you are?"
She looked me dead in the eye. She had straight shoulder length, blonde hair and hazel eyes. Three other girl stood behind her, all with blonde hair besides one. She had scarlet red hair and looked like she did not want to be there.
"Hello I'm talking to you." The hazel eyed girl snapped her fingers.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I wa..."
