For some ungodly reason no one in this screwed up world can see colors beyond blacks, whites, and grey scales until they meet their soulmate. How messed up is that? It's absolutely awful if you ask me. I mean, says the extremely bitter, extremely lonely Moon Y/N. It just disappoints me in every way possible that people like me who haven't met their soulmate can't experience color. I'd love to know what my mom means when she says my dad brought home a bouquet of red roses for her. Or when my brother talks about how the night sky outside the city is navy blue. Or when my best friend tells me about how she loves when her girlfriend wears red lipstick. It hurts seeing all these people so happy, with their lives full of colors that I can't even begin to imagine. It makes the people like me feel like they're just a useless piece in this twisted monopoly game. Then again, I hope I find my soulmate soon.
"Y/N! Come here, I've missed you my darling," coos my mother from the other room. It's only been since dinner last night but she loves when her only daughter stays where the light can shine on her.
I smile, "Of course, momma. I'll be right out."
I leave my room to go sit with my mom, just sit with her and have mom describe the colors to her. It is our favorite past time, especially since I'm the only member of the family left without my soulmate.
She looks excitedly at me, "Do you remember when I took you to get your hair dyed? And I told you it was blue? Now because you've washed it the color has started to fade to green. And I can tell you've been crying because around your eyes is a little pink, so are your cheeks."
"That's amazing, momma. What other colors have you seen today?"
"Oh, baby, I've seen all of them. I've seen your fathers chocolate brown eyes and your brothers bright pink cheeks and your green hair. Today I saw the daisy we planted in the garden and they were this bright yellow that only can be found in nature. And I've seen my favorite color, purple, in the little wild violets in the backyard. Oh how I hope you can see color soon. You'll love this, it's a whole new world."
I couldn't help but smile at my mom's cheery outlook on life. Maybe that was something else that came with colors when you found your soulmate. "Momma, how do you know for sure you've found your soulmate?"
She looks down to where I sit, "Well obviously after that first encounter with them you begin to see the color of their eyes first, and it's everywhere."
"So you don't get all the colors all at once?"
"I'm afraid not, darling. But you'll see all the colors show up the more times you encounter your soulmate. Don't lose hope, sweetheart."
We hear the door unlock, "And that would be your father, home with breakfast. Just like he promised us!"
"Is that all I am, a breakfast boy to you?" my father jokes, before leaning over and kissing my mom.
She laughs her musical laugh, "Of course not, you're that and so much more."
I watch my parents, so happily in love lightly banter back and forth. I hope I find this kind of love once I meet my soulmate.
The door creaks open again, "Mom! Dad! Y/N! I'm home!" calls my brother. He has a large bouquet of flowers in his arms. "Look what Yuta got for me! He told me they were gift for setting him up with my friend Dong Sicheng, apparently they're soulmates. I can't wait to show Taeyong!"
I see my brother Taeil's bright, toothy smile, he sure is in love with Taeyong. I'm so happy for him. Although I wish I was happy like him. Oh well. Hopefully I can spend the rest of my Sunday lazing around in my pajamas. Hopefully my mom doesn't force me to the market today, that she won't try and push me towards people because "they might be my soulmate". I'd like to just sleep for once.
"Y/N, would you come with me to the Farmer's Market? I wouldn't want to go alone, and think of all the possibilities."
I knew she'd ask me to go with her. I didn't really want to, but if I were to leave her hanging she'd pout. So I quickly change out of my pajamas and run to meet her.
I shuffle to the door, "Of course, I'd never miss an opportunity to spend time with my beautiful mom."
She smiles as if she has just come up with the most cunning plan, "Why don't we stop for ice cream before we get there? There's a new place that opened up nearby."
"Will I, your daughter that you love so dearly, ever say no to ice cream?"
"I knew you'd want to go!" she claps her hands in glee.
With a small smile on my face I follow her to the car. We make our way to the little ice cream shop and giggle at signs we saw, just like always. We park and step inside the shop, in awe of how adorable it is. It's just a little family owned ice cream parlor called Han's Ice Cream.
Before I can even step closer to the counter a cheery male voice calls out, "Welcome to Han's, I'm Han Jisung and I'll help you two beautiful young ladies out today."
He sounds sweet, like being surrounded by all this ice cream has affected his personality. I look up from the rows of sweets and I swear he has the most beautiful face to match. His smile lighting up his whole face. His features are all soft and his eyes, his eyes. I think I can see a color? Brown? I think I'm seeing the color of his eyes? My heart begins to race, it's beating out of my chest and all I can think of his if he can see the color of my eyes.
He pauses, "D-dad, can you come out here for a second?"
His dad rushes out, "What is it Jisung, what's wrong?"
"D-d-dad, wh-at color would y-you say h-her eyes are?"
"Son, they're a deep brown, why?"
Jisung smiles, "So that's what brown looks l-like?"
The realization hits Jisung's father like a truck, "You can see the color of her eyes? You can see the color brown," he holds up the cardboard lid of an ice cream, "What color is this?"
"It's brown, dad," he says happily, "C-can you tell me what color my eyes are?"
I smile, "They're brown, a warm brown. They kind remind me of the chocolate chips in the cookie paintings on the walls."
His father looks at him, "Jisung, you have the rest of the day off. Go, go with her somewhere. Go get coffee or to an arcade or to lunch or to the fair that's in town." He shoos him from behind the counter.
All I hear is the blood rushing to my ears as Jisung shyly removes his apron and steps from behind the counter. He smiles wide, which exposes his bright teeth. He really is charming, but I'm nervous to go somewhere with someone I've only met today.
"Well since you know my name, may I know yours? Or should I just call you my soulmate?" he jokes, that bright smile still on his lips.
I giggle, "I mean, you can call me Moon Y/N, but I'd rather be called yours." I drop him a wink, that should show him who he's dealing with.
Our parents are chattering excitedly about how fate must have brought us here and this and that and some other things. Just as I'm making my way towards my mom Jisung pulls my arm. He's dragging me through the shops doors and out onto the busy road. God have mercy on my soul.
