Katherine's POV:
I felt light. Like a feather, floating through the wind. I'd been feeling like that all week after what happened. My mind still couldn't comprehend it. Did Alex? Really kiss me?
My hand subconciously touched my lips. That was my first kiss.
I let out a little giggle and walk from my bedroom downstairs. Mother sits on an old armchair reading a small book. Quietly I walk towards her to see what she was reading. On the cover it said in bright red letters, 'Quilting for Moms'. She must have noticed my small presence because she quickly turns around, slamming the book closed.
"Katherine! What have I told you about sneaking up on me like that?!" Mother yells. She usually didn't get this mad at me. "I'm sorry mother," I whisper, looking down at my feet. She sure knew how to make you feel guilty.
On the floor, suddenly, I notice a spark of silver. I continue to stare at the shining object until mother finally lets out a sigh of tiredness and stands up from her chair. "I'm going to take a nap. Be home by six Kat, OK?" And with that she's gone.
With mother away I bend down to look at the object more closely. It was a silvery key. She must have dropped it when she slammed her book closed. Which, she'd taken with her to bed. But, also beside the small key was a black and white photograph. Father.
No wonder she was so angry.
She was probably trying to hold back the tears again...
I gently pick the two objects up, setting the photograph on the end table, and placing the key inside my dress pocket. Maybe Alex could help me figure out where and what the key unlocked...
Rushing out the front door I head towards the creek once more. It was coming fall and the air was turning colder by the minute. My breath came out in a puff of white smoke as I lightly tread down the dirt road, rubbing my arms together for warmth, hearing only the crunch of dried leaves beneath my feet.
The clobbering of horse hooves echo into the air and seem to stop as soon as I enter the vicinity of Alex's creek. Well, it wasn't technically his creek. We called it Time's Stream. Because even the flow of time could not disturb it, much like how death could not disturb Alex's mission. But, it was still a very slow process.
"Alex...?" I ask, not seeing him in his usual spot. Suddenly, I feel warm arms wrap around me from behind. "Boo."
I let out a laugh and turn around to see a smiling Alex. I'm relieved nothing's changed scince the kiss but... I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed somewhere inside me. I always had been a hopeless romantic, seeking thrilling relationships, and couragous princes. Never really thought I'd end up liking an angel...
"You are terrible at scaring people" I tell him, rolling my eyes. A habit, which, I'd picked up from him. He wasn't always such a good influence as an angel ought to be. "Hmm...am I?" He suddenly yells in my ear and I jump. Mostly out of suprise and not of being afraid.
"Ha! I scared you!" He exclaims triumphantly. A smirk plays onto his blood-streaked face. I roll my eyes once more. I always had to correct people when they were wrong.
"No you just suprised me..."
"Mmhmm. Sure," He teases.
"Well, it's impossible to be scared of you!" I fume. He was making me angry.
"How so?" He asks.
"Because I lo-" I cut myself off abruptly my cheeks flaming up. What had I been about to say just now? I wasn't really sure...
"Because you lo-? Wow~ Now that. Makes perfect sense Kat!" Alex jokes sarcastically. It made my blood boil in my veins. How can he make fun of me about that? He dropped his smirk to let his face hold a much more serious expression. God. Did he know what I was about to say?
