Jack's family enter a private waiting room to find Alexa's brother and parents sitting in silence with their two dogs laying by their feet.
They exchanged ' hellos ' and sat down. Alexa's dog, Tia, walked over to Jack and sat between his legs. Jack smiled weakly and scratched her behind her ears. Tia leaned her body against Jack. Alexa's mum was in silent tears, her dad watery eyes staring at the floor holding his wife's hand. Her brother in painful silence. Jack was slouching and playing with the necklace. Looking at pictures of him and Alexa on his phone. His eyes starting to water. A doctor comes in and takes a breath before speaking.
' which family is the young family? '
Alexa's dad looks up and nods. The doctor sits down and looks over to Jack and his family,
' sorry, you are? '
Jack's dad pipes up and says,
' my son is their daughter's boyfriend '
Jack doesn't say a word. But hearing his dad say that hurt him. The doctor nodded, took a deep breath and proceeded with his words.
