Chapter 6; Apologetic

It was almost mid-day, when Riley awoke the following day. Pulling the blanket back and almost standing within the bucket, which her father had left next to his daughter's bed, Riley got up and left her bedroom.

The rundown apartment was quiet, - too quiet. Walking through into the living area, so Riley could apologise to her father. Cain had gone out early on a errand and had left his daughter a note with some money.

Riley,

I'm going to be out for most of the day, but I've left you some money, so don't be sitting around the apartment all day. We'll talk when I get back, but for now, just go and have some fun.

Dad

Going back into her bedroom and switching on her untraceable mobile phone. A short message from her father instantly came through, showing up on the phone's screen.

'I love you, sweetheart. Please keep your phone switched on today.'

Deleting the message instantly and leaving her mobile phone switched on, Riley went to go shower and dress. It wasn't like her father to allow her to just stay off school. But Riley guessed that after last night, her father must have made an exception.

Once she looked suitable, dressed within her usual skinny jeans and leather jacket. Riley turned from the mirror and left the rundown apartment. With time still to kill, she decided to walk, as she made her way toward's the school.

She wasn't intending on going into the school's main building. But Riley did need to see for herself, if Hayden was alright. After what she'd done to him, during their sword fencing class together. A brand new emotion had taken a hold of Riley, a feeling that she'd never fully experienced before now, - guilt.

Making it to the school in time, just as the students were all released. Riley stood on the opposite side of the road, as she scanned and watched each group of students that piled out into the school's main ground's and car park.

Spotting Hayden clearly from a safe distance, Riley watched him, as he moved off away from his group of friend's and towards his motorbike. Decided that she need to take a chance and make her move, Riley was torn between approaching Hayden or vanishing before he could even spot her?

Her mind made up, Riley swiftly crossed the main road and the school's open car park. Advancing from behind, as Hayden climbed onto his motorbike and went to pull on his helmet. Riley could feel her word's jamming and tightening up within her throat.

"Hayden,"

On hearing his name spoken, Hayden's head twisted back for him to see the girl who'd attacked him the previous day, standing no more than a foot away. "Riley?"

"Hey, listen, I wanted to apologise for yesterday. I didn't mean to, you know..."

Glancing down at the bandage, which covered the sword's slice on his inner part of his upper arm. Hayden's gaze slowly lifted back up to Riley. "It's no biggy, don't worry yourself about it."

Unsure if Hayden was even accepting her apology, Riley turned, as she decided that it was time for her to leave.

"Hey," Hayden called to Riley, as she stopped and slowly glanced back at him. "Do you want to go and grab a coffee or something? You look as if you could really do with one."

"Sure, I'd like that." Stepping back over to Hayden, Riley slipped herself onto the back of the motorbike.

Pulling out of the school's car park, Hayden drove them both safety to a small cafe. On ordering two coffee's, Hayden turned back to Riley and asked her if she would like anything else? But she declined sweetly, as she took a seat close to the cafe's main window.

"It's extremely nice of you to do this. I mean, - I really didn't think you'd even want to see or speak to me again."

"Why would you think that?" Hayden placed one of the steaming cup's of coffee in front of Riley, before taking a seat opposite her.

"Because of how I've treated you." Riley played with the hot cup of coffee, which sat in front of her, instead of making eye contact with Hayden. "I lashed out when I shouldn't have, injuring your arm. And it's not like I've exactly given you the time of the day or have even spoken to you properly."

"Well, we're talking now."

Riley glanced up at Hayden, as she knew he was only trying to lighten the mood, but it was working. "I guess we are." She gave a small smile, shying away.

Drinking their coffee's, Riley found that she actually seemed to enjoy Hayden's company. Even when he would fall into a complete silence and he would slip into just staring at her. Hayden didn't even force Riley to speak, - if she didn't want to - or to further explain herself.

After finishing their drinks, they both left the cafe together, but Hayden didn't drive Riley immediately home. Instead, she gave him direction's to a place where she loved to go within her own free time.

Glancing up and around at the tall ominous trees, Hayden wasn't quiet sure of the darkening wood. "Trees give me the willy's."

Smiling and taking his hand, Riley moved Hayden away from his motorbike and onto the path into the trees. "I'm sure that you're braver than you think. Come on, I'll keep you safe."

"Isn't that supposed to be me saying that to you." Hayden joked, as he allowed Riley to pull him continually forward.

"Stop being such a baby. If it'll make you feel better, then your welcome to take the lead."

"I think I'm fine right where I am."

Glancing back, Riley was sure that Hayden had been checking her out. Which caused her to feel slightly uncomfortable, under the eyes of another person. So she released his hand, as she continued to lead the way deeper into the wood.

Leading him toward's a small lake, which Riley had only just found recently, while exploring the outer reaches of the city. She sat herself upon a large flat rock, as Hayden lowered himself and took a seat next to her.

"So, what's so special about this place? Wouldn't it have been better to come here during the day time?" To Hayden, the wood seem kind of gloomy and creepy. As the sun began to set within the distance, hidden behind the dark ominous trees.

"Shh," Riley relied. "just watch."

Within minutes, as the light faded and shifted further into a dull gloom. Hundred's of fireflies began to appear, fluttering and dancing. Flashing their miniature bodies light repeatedly, as they hovered just above the surface of the small lake.

Hayden was speechless, as he watched the fireflies dance. A smile gradually appearing across his face, Hayden had never seen anything as beautiful, within his entire life.

Apart from the strange girl who'd brought him there and was closely sat next to him. Her finger's where also just inches away from his own, which Hayden took note of. As his eyes slowly raised and connected with Riley's, who turned and smiled back at him.
