Happy pride month, everybody!

Chapter eight: Almost
We walked to my house, enjoying the sunlight on that late winter sunny day. As we passed in front of a small park, he stopped walking.
"Do you mind if we sit here for a while?" he asked. "It's a lovely day."
I smirked. "Oh my, is our athlete tired of walking?"
He chuckled. "I am, actually. Water's tiring, as well, you know?"
"Fair enough," I said. "There's a bench."
The snow had melted entirely by now and spring was beginning to show its colours. The leaves were just starting to grow, creating very little shadow to sit under. Luckily for us, the sun was not that strong yet. We sat on the bench in silence for a while. I was happy to give him as much time to recover as he needed; I, for one, did not mind being next to him for however long it took.
"Hey, do you wanna go to a party?" He asked out of the blue.
"A party?"
"Yeah, party. You know, people, music, drinks..."
"Whose party?" I asked.
"Well, it's theoretically our team's."
"Theoretically?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow.
"Next Friday we have a competition against another school and we'll have a party when we win against them."
"When you win..." I repeated, analyzing his words. "You're very confident about it, aren't you? It's not even an if."
"It doesn't have to be. I heard their swimmers are terrible. I could beat them with my eyes closed," he said, closing his eyes to prove his point.
"Very well, then. I'll be there to see you"
"Really? Thanks." He smiled. "But you still haven't answered my question." I thought he'd forgotten about it. Damn.
"Parties are not really my thing."
"I'm not into parties either, but I can't dump the team. I've already invited the girls; Mabel said she's coming." I'd be surprised if she didn't. "Elena will also be there and Mylène I don't know, but probably. But please, come, too!"
"You really have planned it all," I said, not sure if I envied his self-confidence for being sure that he'd win, or if I thought he was being arrogant for the same reason. Maybe both. "Fine! I'll go. But you better win that competition!" He chuckled.
"Just so you know, the party is going to happen either way, so you're already in it whatever the result is. Still, I'm going to win. For you." I don't think he noticed how sweet that came out and it probably wasn't even intended to be like that, but I completely loved it.
I smiled at that and he did, too. God, I would've kissed him right then if I'd had the guts to.
"Shall we go?" he asked, dropping the smile rather suddenly.
"Sure."
"Thanks for the break. I needed it."
"No mention."
We continued our walk and, when we least expected, we were already in front of my house. "It's here," I said as we both came in. I closed the door behind us. "You can hang your backpack on the coat stand," I said, doing it myself. He didn't do it.
