Chapter 22: I Want You

It must have been 1 a.m. when we left the gymnasium. He'd previously phoned his sister and she was already waiting for us outside to drive us home and then secretly drive the car to their parents' house, an attitude I still didn't agree with but said nothing this time.

"So did you two have fun?" She asked as we entered the car. "The music sounded nice, from what I've heard."

"Yeah, the party's still going," I answered. "We only left cuz we didn't have any more energy to dance." She chuckled.

"I remember my prom. My heels have never hurt as much as they did that night, but I still danced 'til 1 a.m., when the principal kicked us out. After that, some of my friends and I went to a club and we danced even more 'till 3 a.m. Then we went to see the sunrise in Lake Ontario and I went back home at 8 a.m."

"She slept for almost 24 hours after that and I remember waking up the next day thinking she was dead."

"23 hours, to be more precise. I woke up at 7 a.m. the day after my 'death'" she mocked Nikolai's tone, "ready to work." She sighed. "Ah, those were the days."

"You do not intend to be up until sunrise, do you?" I asked Nikolai, who laughed and put an arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him.

"No, but I'd like to be up for a little longer." He lowered his voice, then said. "There are some other things I'd like to do before the night is over."

He smirked and my heart beat a little faster.

"Oh."

"But don't worry," he said, kissing my head. "If you don't feel like it, we don't have to do it."

"I-I'd like to do it."

Don't get me wrong here. It's just that I had been thinking about that moment a lot lately and now that it was about to happen, I couldn't help but feel a bit eager for it.

"Really?"

I nodded. "Yes. I want to do it."

He smiled. "Okay."

Kate dropped us off just across from my house. I thanked her and we both walked in. The living room light was on and I heard my parent's laughter coming from the same room.

"Hey," I said, emerging from the door. They were playing cards, money was piled on the corner of the table and there were two glasses and a bottle of wine next to them. They had a full night.

"You already home?" My mother asked, clearly drunk. She narrowed her eyes and looked at the clock on the wall. "It's not even 3 yet."

"Yeah, we left at 1 a.m."

"Good boys," Dad said, as drunk as mom.

"We go to a party but they're the ones who get drunk?" Niko whispered to me and I laughed.

"Anyway, we're going to sleep," I said.

Nikolai glanced at me and I shook my head. "We're not." I mouthed to him.

My mother frowned. "Won't you stay a bit? We can play canasta. I know you love it. Oh! Oh! W-we could do it in pairs! You and Kolya and Joseph and I."

I do love it, but not this time. "Maybe some other day. We're really tired."

She nodded. "Sure, sweetie, have a good night you two."
