"I'm sorry, Katie," Jason says, giving me the puppy eyes. "I don't know what got into me."
"Don't call me that," my voice is icy. It's our break at work and he's been doing this the whole time. I don't even know it I can stand to be in the same room as him. "Your lucky I didn't knock your lights out."
"Katie. Please. I think I was just jealous and let that control my actions. Katie..." My eyes flash. I run my fingers through my hair. It's blue again.
"I said don't."
"Katelyn. I'm so sorry. I don't know what got into me."
Neither do I. The Jason who first welcomed me here, wouldn't of acted like this. He would of been kind and welcomed my friends with open arms. At least I think he would. But I hid my true self, did he?
"Look," I say, balling my fists up. "I don't want to talk about it. You did what you did."
"Katelyn, I'm your best friend. I messed up."
I bite my lip to keep from screaming. I try to walk away, but he grabs my shoulder. I spin around.
"No. You know who my best friend's are? Those people you insulted, the people you hurt last weekend."
"Kate...."
"I said stop! What is your problem?"
I shove him off of me. He falls to the ground with a thump.
"What is going on in here?" Percy thunders. He barely looks like Jason, but his sister is blonde so I guess the gene skipped him.
"Nothing, Uncle," Jason lies, quickly standing up. "I slipped."
Percy raises his eyebrows. Please believe it. I don't feel like explaining. I'm already mad.
"Uhuh. You two better sort out what's going on here."
Yeah. Jason better bug off. I'm not big on forgiving. Not right now.
"We will," I say, gritting my teeth.
Percy notices this too. He's too observant.
"Anyways, Katie, your up. Breaks done. It's lunchtime, people want music."
Glad to be away from Jason, I nod. Thank goodness.I walk onto the stage confidently. People know me well by now. Some even come just to hear me song. Percy gave me a raise when someone told him that. From this and the street performances I do outside the Cafe at times, Katie Lynne is a well known name. I decided to keep my fake name as my stage name. Jason's idea. Ugh. Jason. I do not want to think about that annoying pest. Not till I am ready to talk with him and that is certainly not now.
"Hello!" I say into the microphone. I smile a wide, fake smile. My gaze falls onto Travis standing in the back. Usually, he works with Donna in the store, but she gave him time off because of some reason I can't remember. He's holding Abby. He points at me. Abby sees me and I hear her shout,
"Mama!"
I blow a kiss.
"I hope your all enjoying your time at Coco's today. The scones are delicious." People agree. I notice most of the regulars, but there's a man in a fancy suit that I don't quite recognize who is sitting on the back. "This song, is dedicated to someone who is really getting on my nerves at the moment."
I see Jason taking someone's order. He looks up at me, startled. I take a deep breath.
Placing the microphone into the stand, I pick up the guitar that was recently added to the cafe. Percy learnt that I played earlier this month and decided that we needed a break from piano. I give it a strum. I close my eyes and begin to play. I have most songs memorized. People always did say I had the best memory.
"Sick of you playing on the Xbox thing.
You're never gonna get me with the diamond ring.
Look at you, so confused.
No, you don't have a clue.
I bet you think you got me good.
Time for me to move on
Nothing I could do so..."
I stare at Jason. Travis is holding back a smile. He never did like Jason that much. That usually annoys me.
"Leave, you are not the boy you said you'd be.
And it's so hard for me to breathe.
How can I stand by you boy if you're going nowhere.
We're going nowhere."
Jason's jaw tightens. I hear Abby call my name again. I smile at her.
"Bye, don't have the time to see you cry.
I'm tired of asking myself why.
How can I stand by you boy if you're going nowhere.
We're going nowhere."
People are listening as my voice hits the high and low notes. My voice is easily heard over the quiet chatter of the cafe. The people here don't know that this song is literally about my coworker. Well kinda. How funny.
Jason stomps off. It hurts. That's why I'm so mad. It hurts that someone I considered my friend did this. They did this to my other friends. It hurt. I closed my eyes.
"Leave, you are not the boy you said you'd be.
And it's so hard for me to breathe.
How can I stand by you boy if you're going nowhere.
We're going nowhere.
Bye, don't have the time to see you cry.
I'm tired of asking myself why.
How can I stand by you boy if you're going nowhere.
We're going nowhere."
I hear footsteps coming towards me. My eyes fly open and I see the little white haired, blue eyed girl who can barely walk, holding the hands of her father.
"We're going nowhere."
Travis is at the bottom of the platform holding Abby who reaches out for me. I place the guitar down by my feet. The applause drowns out anything Abby trys to say. I reach out my hand and Travis takes it and steps onto the stage with me. Before I wrap my arm around him, I lean down and pick up Abby. I kiss Travis quickly on the lips, not caring about professionalism.
People clap. I turn to Travis and smile.
"I love you," he whispers. He leans forward and lightly kisses me again. I smile. Out of the corner of my mind, I see Jason scowling. I couldn't care less. Jason and I, we're not going anywhere right now. Not if he's going to act like he is.****
I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. It's shorter than the last one, sorry about that.
I picture Katelyn having a voice like Perrie Edwards post DNA, what do you think?
I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. Thanks for reading.
