"Jason! Get your ass out of the shower!" I screamed, pounding on the bathroom door. "I need to get in there!"

"Calm down, Kaylie, I'm almost done!"

You know what? Screw showering. I sighed and walked away from the bathroom, down the hall and into my room. I slipped on yoga pants and a sweatshirt and looked in the mirror. My long dark hair was a tangled mess and I looked like I just took a trip to hell, but besides that I was pretty decent.

I went back to the bathroom and screamed at the door, "I'm going to gather some berries and see if any of the traps worked!"

"Okay! Don't be out too long!"

"Alright!" I screamed back, already running down the wooden staircase and out the door. We lived in, litteraly, the middle of no where, there were no neighbords for miles and miles, so we had the woods in the back all to ourselves. It's where we got most of our food. Berries, animal, and fruit was our main diet, but I didn't mind. Well, I kind of did...but I tried not to think about it.

I knew the woods by heart, every single part of it. Jason usually does most of the hunting, but it couldn't hurt to check the traps. I did, not taking very long to find them, even though most of them were hidden, concealed by trees and other plants. Two of them actually worked, and I took the rabits off of the trees and threw them over my shoulders, one on each.

I looked around for any good berry bushes, and began to collect and put them in my bag. My stomach grumbled. I hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon. But I couldn't eat. It's not safe to eat berries before they're washed. No matter how hungry you are.

I collected most of the bush, which was blueberries. I hated blueberries. They just didn't work out with me, which was probably why I was so happy when I found two strawberry bushes and started to pluck those off. Do you have any idea how hard it is not to eat a big, juicy, ripe strawberry right off the bush? Really, really, really hard. Like, impossible.

I had one more trap to check, a deer one. It probably hadn't worked, and even if it had I wouldn't have a clue how to get the deer out, or the strength to carry it back in the house for that matter. But at least I could tell Jason that it was emptey so he wouldn't have to come back in the woods to check himself.

The deer traps are always on the ground and camaflauged the best. It took me a little while to find it, my feet crunching under the twigs and leaves. I found it about ten minutes later, peering over the edge. A deer trap is set up kind of like a big hole...if a deer is running away from an attacker or just plain running, they don't usually look down or pay attention to anything as small and detailed as a hidden hole, so they fall and can't get out, giving Jason the change to shoot them and us the chance to have a good meal.

However, there wasn't a deer in the hole. There were five bodies.

I screamed. I wanted to look away...but I couldn't. I looked back down, trying to make the bodies out. They seemed to be teenage boys, and all of them were lying at somewhat unnatural angles. But I know what a dead body looks like, and none of them looked quite like it.

One of them was consious, sitting in the hole with his head in between his knees.

"Hello?" I called down and the boys head popped up, revealing blue eyes and a mop of blonde hair.

"Who are you?" he cried, fear mixed in with a Irish accent.

"I could ask you the same thing," I said. "Why are you in my deer trap?"

"You think I chose to be?" he spat back up.

"I don't know, maybe. How'd you get in there?"

"It's a long story," he said, and his voice broke.

I paused. See, I have this problem with trusting people...it's really not my fault. Blame my dad. But he looked innocent, and hurt, and just plain terrified. And I'm kind of a princess when it comes to other people's feelings.

"Do you...need any help?"

"No shit sherlock."

I took a deep breath. Jason put a rope in all of the deer traps, so he could get out if he had to go in there. However, the boy didn't seem in good enough shape to do that, so I climbed down first. "Okay, I'll help you out and then take you back to my house, okay?"

"What about the lads?" he asked, and I guessed that he was referring to the unconsious boys.

"My brother will come back and get them. Now come on." Now that I was closer up I could see that he was hurt...he had a cut above his left eyebrow and was shaking. His arm was bent weirdly. He looked pale.

"Do you promise?"

"Yes."

He nodded slowly and I helpt him out of the hole, then climbed up the rope myself. He seemed to be having trouble walking, and I draped one arm around my shoulder, throwing the rabits on the ground. Oh, well.

The walk back to the house was pretty far, but I was in good shape and the boy didn't weight much. I threw open the door once we arrived and screamed, "Jason! Situation!"

He appeared two seconds later. He looks a lot like me, with dark hair and eyes. He's seventeen, I'm fourteen now. It's been seven years since the day.

"What the hell?" he said, referring to the boy on my arm.

"I found him and five others in your deer trap. He was the only one awake and I wasn't sure what to do so..."

"Place him on the bed in the living room. I'm going to go see about those others. Are you okay alone?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. Go."

I placed the blonde boy on the couch as Jason said. "What's your name?" I asked.

"Niall."

"Well, Niall, I'm Kaylie, and you're gonna be okay, you got that?" I asked, my girly side taking over. "Just close your eyes and go to sleep."
