I crouched against the wooden chair, shaking slightly but not daring to make a sound. Jason was across the room, looking at me. I knew that he wanted to come over but he knew that it wasn't safe for him...or me.

The house was silent, and I heard crickets from outside. I was afraid of the woods. I never wanted to go in there. They were so dark and scary, full of secrets. That's why people are scared of the dark. Everything's the same, everything's where it was before. But you can't see. You don't know what may linger behind the shadows, and at any moment reach out and stab you in the back...

It's the not knowing that kills us all.

"Dammit Elizabeth!" I heard daddy scream and flinched.

This was the first time that I  had caught them aruging like this.

I didn't understand. They were in love. So why were they yelling, why were they hitting, why were they fighting? Is that how people show love?

"No damn you, Richard! Creeping around with that old hag-"

"She's young! And I never did shit with her!"

Why was daddy swearing at mommy? They'd never done this before. Why were they..I just didn't understand.

Mommy rolled her eyes and screamed, "You bastard! You know for a fact that you-"

"Elizabeth," Daddy hissed under his breath. "The children."

Both eyes flew over to me, saw me cowaring under the table, flinching with each word they said, watching as they yelled. "Get out of here Kaylie," Dad said quietly.

I didn't move.

"GET OUT!"

I shot up so fast that I hit my head on the table. Daddy had never ever screamed at me. Not like that. Jason's arms were around me then and he was screaming, "Calm down dad! I'll get her out!" But dad's attention was already lost on us and had lingered over to Mommy, and I gasped as I heard the horrible SMACK! as he hit her.

Hitting mommy? Is that how people show love too?

I started to cry. Jason lead me up to the attack and hushed me. His green eyes were warm but I saw something past the youth and childhood that were the first sign of him becoming a man, again much too fast, taking the role in my life that his little sister needed oh so badly.

"It's okay, Kay. They're just arguing a bit. Everything will be fine in the morning."

I didn't beilve him. He hit her. He HIT her. Why?

"Everything's going to be okay."
