Aelin

I break our kiss.

Theon opens his eyes.

"This isn't supposed to happen..." Is all I say before I storm out of my room, down the halls, and out of his sight.

I hurry down the stairs and head out to the basketball court.

As soon as I get there, I stop to catch my breath.

Once that first tear broke free, the rest follow in an unbroken stream. I was angry.

I felt my heart bumping against my rising chest.

"Aelin?"

My twin.

And Zander.

Zander and Asterin.

"What's going on? Why are you crying?"

I find it hard to speak. My tears still flowing free down my cheek.

Zander bends himself beside Asterin while they both helped me get back on my feet.

That's when Zander pulls me into an embrace.

It was a warm comforting hug. One I wouldn't want to break.

I hear heavy footsteps getting nearer, "Zander, Asterin, " He pauses for a moment before he says, "Aelin."

Although I can't see the two brothers, I can already feel the tension rising between them.

"May I have a word, Theon?" Zander's frustrated voice rises, "In private." His tone is now sharper, that his chest is vibrating against my ear.

Zander lets go of me and heads towards the gate.
He gives Theon -who's still standing in his position a look- and Theon instantly follows.

"Stay here, Asterin."

My twin tries to stop me from what I was about to do but I dodge her hand and run.

I follow theirsteps. They're heading to Zander's room.

No, They're both getting up the stairs to the rooftop. Zander doesn't close the door and slightly pushes it.

And then I see it.

Zander's foot slams into Theon's back. Theon falls back.

He then lifts him and forces him to remain standing. He wraps his arms around Theon's head and holds him up as he thrusts wicked knee shots into his ribs.

I can see the pain in Theon's eyes. His breathing becomes labored. He wobbles as Zander pushes him backward sending him into the concrete wall.
Theon's body flops with a wet, fleshy thud into the ground.

Zander fists his own brother repeatedly like he's exercising on a heavy bag rather than hitting a person.

I hear myself scream. Zander sees me.

In an instant, he rushes towards me and pushes me outside then pushes the door closed.

"How much did you see? HOW MUCH?" He screams in my face while shaking me by the shoulders.

I am sobbing and fighting the urge to scream again.

Zander lets go of my weak temple then storms out of the roof, leaving me with a bleeding Theon.

I don't know what to do.

"Prin---cess why-- are y-you he--"

"Shhhhhh, Theon.. you'll be fine. I'll help you. Just... Stay with me, okay?" I gather my courage and try to raise my voice as much as my oxygen allows me to.

I am pulling his body up and lifting him on my back.
He's so heavy but I don't stop.

His blood is now all over my dress and his open wounds are creating a line on the ground because I'm dragging his heavy body towards the door and everything is happening so fast and I'm so terrified of what I should do next and what I shouldn't.

"Aalin," Theon breathes my name several times before his voice cuts off.

We're in my room.
