Matt Rhodes awoke from his bed. He took a good look around and wasn't pleased with what he saw. It was Monday. He hated Mondays. Absolutely hated them. It meant it was the beginning of school. It was the end of February one week before Spring Break. The Saturday that March began. Matt couldn't wait. He didn't have to be called an idiot or a weirdo for nine whole days. Matt lived in a suburb near Houston, Texas. Matt stared into his mirror. Something about himself unimpressed him. He had straight, brown hair, big, blue eyes, and white skin.
It was strange though. Matt kept hearing this weird beeping sound. He turned his head...
"Ah no! Ah no! I'm almost late!" Matt exclaimed. He got his back-pack, put his duel dusk in his back pack, and ran down his stairs while combing his brown hair. Matt took off to the school. He avoided cars, poles, and pedestrians.
"Almost there!" Matt exclaimed he saw his school kept coming closer and closer. He had two minutes left. He ran through the doors, turned the corner, and dashed through the hallway. Mr. Johnson, his english teacher, had a huge smile as he was about to close the door to his classroom. His blue eyes seemed to get smaller as his anticipation increased. Matt Rhodes was finally going to be late. Matt always woke up late and always ran to his classroom and always managed to not be tarty. Today was finally going to be the day that Matt was late, but as he was about to close the door, Matt stopped the door from closing with his foot and fell into the classroom. His class started laughing at him.
"Please take your seat, Mr. Rhodes!" Mr. Johnson demanded angrily.
"Hahaha uh yea..." Matt said with his cheeks turning red with embarrassment.
"It's a wonder he still goes to school!" one of his classmates exclaimed.
"Yea! What a loser!" another roared.
"That is enough!" Mr. Johnson yelled, "We are going to continue class. Okay, tell me once more what a proverb is...Lisa!"
Matt looked at his desk, then looked through the window of his classroom. Tears started forming in his eyes. Matt tried his best to hold them in, but a few came out. His eyes darted to the alley of a building he could see. A shadowy figure was walking towards his school, but before he could think about it more...
"Mr. Rhodes!" Mr. Johnson yelled as he slammed his hands across Matt's desk, "Pay attention!"
"Uh...Sorry sir!" Matt cried fearfully, trying desperately to hold his tears in. He believed his classmates were right. He was a loser. A worthless loser. Not only did no one like him at his school, but no one would duel him. He could never reach the level of his brother if he could never duel.
It was a long class, but after it and his science class, it was lunch time. As usual, Matt sat alone with no one to talk to. He laid his lunch along the blue table. Suddenly, Duel Monsters cards slid across the table and went all over the table. Matt turned his head. A black skinned boy, with brown eyes, black cropped hair, and a plaid shirt started reaching his hands out and collecting the cards.
"Sorry!" the boy said worriedly.
"Woah! Duel Monsters?" Matt asked excitedly.
"Wait a second!" the boy said angrily, "You're that weird kid! Matt Rheese or whatever.
"It's uh Rhodes..." Matt said sadly.
"Anyway, I didn't realize losers played Duel Monsters!" the boy said with a nasty grin.
"What of it?" Matt asked.
"Nothing..." the boy said while walking away.
"Yea, whatever..." Matt said sadly. He stared at his own deck and took three cards out of it. They were the three legendary cards his brother had generously given him. He had never tried to show them off or brag about them. If he ever became a champion, what would people think of him if his ego was bigger than his title.
School had finally ended. Matt slowly walked away from the campus of his middle school. The week was only gonna get worse for him, so he might as well not be in a hurry for it. He had stopped walking and kneeled down. All of his tears came out. He couldn't hold them in. People may think fists hurt, but words can hurt even more. All is a sudden, he heard a deep voice coming from an alley. It was the same one he'd seen that shadowy figure come from at the beginning of the day. He couldn't understand anything the voice was saying though. Curiosity overtook him. He dragged his body into the alley. There was a turn coming up, but he stayed behind the wall before the turn so he could hear the conversation without being seen.
"You still haven't found one..." a deep voice claimed.
"That's right!" another deeper voice said angrily, "I bet I searched that entire school and found no one with it."
"I see..." the deep voice replied.
"What should I do?" the deeper voice asked.
"Soldier, look through the school tomorrow. Maybe they were sick, because I swear the Watcher is about twelve years old and lives in Houston. Coming here and learning the native language here was hard enough, but if it was all for nothing...
"I understand..." the deeper voice, who was apparently named Soldier, claimed.
Matt was flooded with questions. Who were these people? What were they doing? And why were they looking for this 'Watcher' character? Matt's inner thoughts were suddenly clouded as he lost his balance and fell to the ground, exposing himself in the process.
The two men's heads darted to Matt. One of them lifted a lantern. The one holding the lantern's eyes were purple, but he had a brown hoodie and a scarf around his mouth. The other was a black knight that seemed familiar for some reason.
"Who are you? How did you find us? And why are you here?" Soldier asked.
"He probably can't hear you..." the purple-eyed man said while turning his head.
"Yes I can..." Matt said with a confused look on his face.
"What?" they both exclaimed in unison. They were shocked. It was as if they were statues.
"Wait! Kids were laughing at this boy! He can't possibly be a good duelist at all!" Soldier exclaimed.
"Hey!" Matt roared, "I am too a good duelist. People just don't take me seriously, and it's not Halloween guys! Take off the costumes!"
"Funny one, aren't you?" Soldier scowled.
"May I see your deck?" the purple-eyed man asked randomly.
Matt checked to see if there was anyway he could steal or ruin his cards. It didn't seem like there was any. "Uh, ok?" he said uncertainly while handing the man his deck.
The man's eyes widened as he spun completely around and handing Matt his deck. Matt counted his cards and made sure he had all of them.
"You didn't..." Soldier said worriedly.
"No! I didn't..." the purple-eyed man answered.
"I gotta get home!" Matt exclaimed while looking at his watch. He sprinted out of the alley and to his house. As he was running, the purple-eyes man's eyes narrowed on him, then a smile appeared on his face. He had made the right choice...
