What I Forgot

I wake up to the sky shining with rays of light. I cover my face and turn onto my stomach. I grunt feeling pain.

"Hey, are you okay?" Elijah worries.

I feel too much pain to move. It's as if knives are being hurled into my gut. I hold my stomach, and I can feel a hand on my back.

"Skyler, talk to me. Are you okay?" he repeats.

Immediately the pain stops, and I can breathe again. I sit there for a moment, trying to think about what just happened.

"Yeah, I'm..." I pause, "fine."

Elijah lowers his eyebrows as if he were studying for a math test. He raises one eyebrow, and stares at me puzzled. He grips my hand and looks deep in my eyes.

"Sky, look. This is the key: teamwork," he tells me.

A moment later I realize something. When I do, I cover my mouth quickly and widen my eyes. I look at Elijah, and he looks at me as if I perplexed him.

"I have the key card of one of the military guys, but the situation is, it's in my room. We have to get it!" I proclaim.

Elijah covers his eyes with one hand. His face is to the floor. He stays in that position and I feel bad. So, instead of asking him to come with me, I stand up and march to my house. Before I know it, however, I feel a mist of air reach my cheek. I look to my right, and there is Elijah.

"I can do this on my own," I add.

I can hear his gentle little chuckle, and I can feel his eyes on me.

"I bet," he adds fearlessly.

I nudge him in the stomach and he acts as if I hurt him. I giggle and he looks up at me with a smile. I gradually walk up to the front door and hear a shout. My eyes widen and I look at Elijah. He is giving me a hand gesture to duck, so I do. Suddenly, my desk is thrown out the window. With complete terror on my face, I freeze. I look at Elijah again, and he is gone from his placement. I get down from the porch and climb the bricks. I realize that I look like Spider-Man, and as I look down, I feel like it, too.

"Sky, what the heck do you think you're doing?" Elijah awes.

"I'm climbing the bricks. What does it look like I'm doing?" I respond.

I step up, and my foot slips. Trying again, I place my hand on the highest I can and climb. I can feel Elijah's hands, grab my waist, and they pull me back down.

"Hey, I was doing it," I protest.

He raises one eyebrow up at me, and moves past me. Instead of climbing the bricks, he walks up the porch and uses his arms to climb a half a foot to my bedroom. I facepalm at my stupidity.

He climbs up the open window and walks out of the room. I stare at the window with my hand over my mouth. The angle I was at made it easy for me to see the rest of my house. Trying not to scream, I try to climb, but fail in the act. I tumble and fall into bushes. Suddenly, I can hear big footsteps from inside the house. Looking up, I see Elijah's head dangling from the window. I gently steady myself on my legs, and sprint to the side of the house. The door opens, and my mother's head pokes out.

"Who's there?!" she hollers.

"Mother. It's me," I whisper.

My mother looks over to where I am standing.

"Who's me?" she questions.

"You don't know who you are? Wow, Mom. I thought you knew 'me'," I say, emerging from the side of the house.
