I look between my mother and father, them both smiling at me. Secretly, I can feel my heart start to skip beats, and my breath quicken. Next thing I know, I'm in a hospital bed.
I look over at the window, and a blast of moonlight hits my face. I look at the empty seats and empty room. I always hated being alone in a room. It made me feel lonely. I look at the side table, and see a note. Picking it up, I open it and start to read.
"Dear, Skylar.
I heard you passed out. Trust me, in your situation, I would, too. I just dropped this letter off to tell you that I like you. You know me. I think. I'm your next door neighbor, Elijah.
Feel better soon. "
I stare at the letter, and start feeling the rush of tears stream down my face. I start to remember my papers falling everywhere, and I see his face. My eyes grow as big as saucers, and my mouth drops. My childhood best friend...
I hear a pound on the door, and I quickly glance. My father had arrived with my mother behind him. The smile on his face widens as he sees my face.
"Dad, Why are you here? You left, remember. So, why are you suddenly running back?" I question with rage.
"Woah, woah, woah, please calm down, Sky. I left because I needed time to think," he responds.
"For six years?" I scold.
I fold my arms and whine like a little kid whose balloon popped. I wipe a tear from my eye as my father holds my hand.
"Skylar, I'm sorry, but if your mother can forgive me, then I'm sure you can, too. At least, I hope you can," he says.
I look down and, start to pout.
"Fine, I'll forgive you," I pause, "but you have to buy me a phone."
My mother stars to chuckle at my request. I smile, and my dad looks at my mom. Something about the way he's looking at her makes her laugh harder. I, however, refuse to uncross my arms, and I let my smile go.
I didn't really forgive my dad. He left, and he thinks he can just wiggle his way back into our lives? If he was going to sit at the dinner table, I should get something out of it. It would be better if my brother was here. He always made me smile when I was younger, but he was in his military training right now. I miss him terribly.
"Sleep well, honey. We will be waiting for a special someone to arrive," my mother tells me, kissing my head.
Just that moment, my mother winks at me, and I start to think about people in my head.
I quickly fall into a dream. In my dream everything is black. There is no dream; it's just black.
"Sky, Come on, Sky. Wake up," I hear a familiar tone speak.
For a minute, I think it's Billy, but it's not exactly his voice. I open my eyes one at a time to see my brother.
"Austin!" I scream.
Without a second thought, I wrap my arms around his neck, and he wraps his arms around my back.
"I missed you so much! Does this mean you are staying home from now on?" I question.
I can see the disappointment on my brother's face and assume the worst. This means that he's not coming home. He's going to spend the next few years in the military, and I won't be able to see him.
"I'm sorry, Sky. I can't stay. I'm lucky I was even able to come today," he explains.
I frown and bite my lip to keep from crying. I pull the covers back over me, and wave at him.
"See you later, Aust," I whimper.
He waves back to me, and disappears into the hallway. I look back to the seats and see my sister sitting there.
"Kasie? I didn't see you sitting there. When did you get here?" I ask.
She just smiles at me, and stands up.
"Skylar, I'm glad you're okay. I was at school when I heard you had passed out. I got so worried that I had to see you," she explains.
"I'm fine, Kasie," I reassure her.
She smiles at me, pats me on the arm, and walks out of the room, leaving me in complete silence.
