I remember two months ago when term started that I was trying out for the football team. We were tasked to run full speed down the field and tackle the biggest member of the team and make him fall down to the ground. I was third from the start and I was actually nervous but I kept telling myself that it would be fine, counting on the fact that I have a healthy and athletic body. A second later, I saw that the geek from the start of the line started running and hit the jock, hard. Ow! He bounced back, literally, and fell facedown. That's got to hurt. The second one's up, and he managed to hurt the jock a bit, I saw that he winced when he was hit but nonetheless, he was still standing. Now it was my turn. I ran full speed and told myself that I would make it, I could do it. Then halfway down the track I stumbled upon this other football member who was running from my left. BOOM. He elbowed my jaw and I came down the ground hard. My eyes were stinging and my whole face seemed like it was just hit with a giant hammer. My heart was beating so fast I was afraid it would burst.
That was how I felt right now. As I saw Lucy pinned down by a zombie, I was shocked. I meant so shocked that my heart was beating faster than the speed of light and my body forgot how to react. My mind was basically buffering. When I finally regained my composure, I ran full speed with my pistol in hand then kicked the zombie off of Lucy. It stumbled through the wall then was about to run towards me when I shot it in the head. BANG. With a satisfying bounce of the body, it fell to the floor, motionless.
I didn't wait for any movement. I ran back to Lucy and she was really having a shock. Her eyes were open huge and she was breathing fast. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?" I asked.
"I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm okay." she said, looking at the body of the zombie that attacked her.
"That's good, Lucy." I replied, reassuring her. "But how exactly did that enter the building? You guys said this place was impenetrable."
"We didn't say it was impenetrable. We said it was sealed. That doesn't mean a hundred percent safe." she said. "Oh god. Which entrance did he came from?" she asked, standing up.
"I thought there were others patrolling?"
"I know. Well, maybe there aren't now." she said, looking me in the eye. "We need to gather everyone."
Fifteen minutes later, everyone was up and alert, though some of them were still dazed. "How did it came in?" I heard Rose ask Lucy. "I really don't know. We'll need to check on every entrance we know of."
"Wait. How many survivors are patrolling each entrance?" Nina asked, cutting into the conversation.
"Two to three of them. And there are currently four exits that we know. The one in front, where you got in, the one in the back, the fire exit through the grocery, and the emergency exit at the back of the arcade."
"And who guards those exits?" I asked.
"Well, Kate and Muscle dude guards the front. Jacob and Felix guard the back. Melissa and Shawn guard the arcade, then Cassie, Reese, and Mike guard the grocery."
"So what do you do?"
"I monitor the surveillance cameras. I was returning to the foodcourt for some doughnuts when I encountered that thing while Rose was taking my place."
"Okay. Well how didn't Rose see the zombie?" Nina asked.
"I didn't saw it. It was lurking in the shadows until it grabbed Lucy swiftly. I swear, I hadn't any time to warn the others because Lucy was already pinned down, then Wes came and saved her. I immediately ran down here to see you guys." she defended.
"It's okay. But we need to know where it came from. Wes, Nina, didn't you see the zombie while you were in the foodcourt?" Lucy asked.
"Uhm, no. Nina and I were talking then she uhm... told me to watch her until she slept. Then I heard you..."
"Oh-kay. Well, we have to split up. Since there are four of us, I'll go to the front, Rose will go to the back, Nina will go to the arcade, and you will go to the grocery." she directed.
"Fine. You said that muscle dude is gathering supplies, right? So he must be in the grocery. I'll go find him too." I said.
"Gosh, right! He was in the grocery so Kate was left alone in the ..." she didn't manage to finish her sentence because she ran quickly towards the front entrance.
"Well, the grocery is opposite the foodcourt and the arcade is upstairs, to the left. I'll see you guys later, hopefully." Rose said, walking off.
"I'll see you later." Nina said, then she started to the escalator.
Well, I guess it was time to take out my grocery list a.k.a. my weapons. I guess I'd be shopping for dinner after all.
