Better (BokuAka)

Just like all people, Akaashi Keiji liked things that were better, at least according to him. He ate food that was tastier, he studied harder in the subjects he liked more, and, of course, hung out with friends that he thought were better.

He thinks it's only natural to have favourites. After all, he had favourites too. Especially favourites in people.

Being an introvert, he didn't like to talk, much less be around people all the time. In fact, the most social thing he did was probably attending volleyball practices. Yet there was only one person he genuinely liked talking to--Bokuto Kotaro.

To him, Bokuto Ko taro was the best person out there. He was better than everyone. He loved the way his feet ran across the gym floor, the way his arms reached up for a spike, and, most of all, the way his mouth formed "Akaashi" as if that word belonged to him.

Oh, how Akaashi wishes he belonged to Bokuto.

He wanted to be beside him all day. He wanted to talk to him during lunch about how his last period was. He wanted to know what his favourite type of chocolate was. He wanted to hug him tight when things weren't going well. He wanted to tell him one thing.

He wanted to tell him that he loved him.

But he couldn't. The words won't come out.

But he still loved him. Bokuto was like oxygen. Akaashi couldn't live without him. It was hard to breathe whenever he remembered that Bokuto wasn't his. His chest hurt more when he realized that if Bokuto wasn't his, he could be someone else's. But he didn't worry. He knew that Bokuto would tell him if he had found someone. 

And he was right.

One day, Bokuto showed up at school with a big grin on his face.

"What are you so happy about, Bokuto-san?"

"hEY HEY HEY, AKAASHI! GUESS WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?"

"What happened?"

"A GIRL ASKED ME OUT!"

Akaashi's heart drops.

"W-well, did you say yes?"

"OF COURSE!"

Akaashi's world crumbles.

"SHE'S SO CUTE! SHE HAS BROWN EYES AND BLOND HAIR, SHE'S GOT A REALLY PRETTY VOICE..."

Akaashi's ears ring. He can't hear anymore. He struggles to breathe and smile, but tears stream out of his eyes.

"Akaashi? Akaashi, are you okay?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry, Bokuto-san."

"Why are you crying?"

"I'm happy for you, Bokuto-san. Really, really happy for you. I hope she treats you well."

Akaashi walks away with Bokuto looking at him with worried eyes and the last half of his sentence still stuck in his throat.

"I hope she treats you better than I would've."

Akaashi doesn't show up to school for the rest of the week. None of Bokuto's calls go through.

Four days later, Bokuto wakes up with a note on his bedside table. 

Bokuto-san-

By the time you read this, I'll be gone. Long gone. You won't ever see me again. And I probably owe you an explanation of why.

I love you, Bokuto-san. I'm going to call you Kotaro in this letter because it's something I've always wanted to do but never got the chance to, so I'm truly sorry if it's disrespectful.

Kotaro, I love you. Always had, and always will. It pains me that you've found someone better than I ever will be, but I hope you're happy.

I'm happy for you, Kotaro. I'm really, really happy for you.

A week later, Bokuto breaks up with his girlfriend.

He said he lost his best friend thanks to her, but every single day, he thinks about whether or not he was the one to blame.
