Kurapika awoke to see a white ceiling, in a bed he didn't recognize. He sat up abruptly, whirling his head around, trying to remember where he was.
"Hey, hey, Kurapika, take it easy. You passed out, you're in the infirmary. I was requested not to let you out until you're fully better." A familiar voice, it had to be...
"Leorio..." Kurapika let out a sigh of relief as he turned to look at the older man. He hated doctors usually, Leorio was the only one he'd let attend to him. He was his boyfriend after all. He had a sudden realization, and turned around to see his stealth dolphin ability hovering in the air. "Shit." He quickly deactivated his emperor time. "Leorio, how long have I been out?"
"Hm? Not long, around three hours."
Kurapika's eyes shot wide open. Emperor time was active for three hours? That had to take at least over four hundred days off his lifespan. over a year...
"Dammit." Kurapika muttered to himself.
"Kurapika? There's something wrong, isn't there?" Leorio said with a concerned look in his eyes.
"Oh, it's nothing, Leorio. It's just unfortunate I had to miss that many hours of work."
Leorio sighed. "I don't believe that it's nothing. There's something else wrong... does it have to do with that ability? The one that stayed by you while you were asleep?" after Leorio said this, Kurapika flinched. It seemed he hit the bull's eye. "Kurapika?"
Kurapika let out a tired sigh. "Well, I suppose I can't hide it forever. This ability is my stealth dolphin, connected to my emperor time ability. When I use emperor time, my eyes turn scarlet and all of my nen types are maximized, meaning I can use all types of nen, one-hundred percent." After the short explanation, Leorio seemed to take in the information slowly, before speaking.
"And... there's a restriction on this one too, isn't there? One you didn't want me to know about?"
"There is."
"Life threatening?"
"Yes."
Leorio sighed, getting fed up with the short and vague answers. "Tell me the restriction."
Kurapika paused for a moment, contemplating whether he should tell Leorio or not.
"Kurapika, you can't avoid this forever, sooner or later you'll have to tell me, and I'd much prefer sooner."
Kurapika nodded. "Very well... Every second my ability is active, I..." He swallowed. He really didn't want to tell this to Leorio, but it's not like he had a choice. He had to tell him eventually. "...Lose an hour of my lifespan..." he practically murmured that last part, but based on Leorio's reaction, he definitely heard him.
"You what? " Leorio was seething with anger. "Every second, you... that's insane, Kurapika! Why would you give yourself an ability like that?!" he took a deep breath to calm himself before speaking again, soft yet still stern and bridled with rage.
"Every time you use this ability you're slowly killing yourself, do you seriously want that?" Leorio tried to keep his voice quiet, but it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to stay calm enough to keep his voice down.
Kurapika let out a sigh. He knew this is how he'd react. "Yes, I understand that. I wouldn't have given myself this ability if I didn't know the consequences, Leorio."
"There's something you seem to have neglected to understand though, Kurapika."
"Oh?" Kurapika tilted his head to the side slightly. "And what would that be?"
