The first thing I became aware of was the construction team working in the back of my brain. It felt like someone was drilling a hole back there. Not to mention the vibrations of the floor underneath me. Everything was working against me to cause me as much pain as possible.

Then a loud boom pierced through my ears and a bright light ignited behind my closed eyelids. Instinctively I wanted to move away from the danger, however, before I could even tighten a single muscle, a hand wrapped itself around my ankle. With one pull I glided across a cold surface and then my world turned upside down. Literary.

I landed with something hard pressed against my stomach, while my upper body hung with my head facing the ground. Blood rushed into my brain, which didn't help with the still persistent headache knocking against the back of my head.

With incredible strength I finally pried my eyes open, only to come across a denim blue surface. It took me a few seconds to realize that what I was looking at was someone's butt dressed in a pair of blue jeans.

The second I realized that someone was carrying me sprawled over their shoulder like some students carried their school bags, my world once again turned for another hundred and eighty degrees. I landed with my butt on a hard cement ground, which shot a sharp sting up my behind.

I wasn't even able to hold myself upwards, so I next found myself with my cheek pressed against the cold ground. A low groan escaped past my lips, while I tried to stop the spinning inside my brain.

The cold the floor emitted actually helped to clear my mind, until the memories came floating back. Elena and Ortiz's punishment. Jared. Piper.

"Piper," I whispered.

Immediately I snapped my eyes shut and tried to reach for Jared through the mind connection we shared. Despite the wall he had taught me to build, I had always still felt like he was looming in the background of my mind. Yet all I came across right now was my screaming mind. It was as if our mate bond had been severed. For the first time since he marked me I felt completely on my own.

Had something happened to him?

I pried my eyes open again and then slowly lifted my upper body into a sitting position. The first thing I noticed was the size of the dark room surrounding me. It looked like it could host at least half of Blue Moon.

Across the room from me was a staircase leading both up and downstairs, while almost right next to me stretched a narrow dark hallway, which ended with an open doorway. Otherwise, the room was bare of any furniture.

The moment I turned my head in the direction of the open doorway, a set of moving legs filled my vision. Down the narrow hallway walked Kevin, the hunter who had once been captured by Dyson and then freed by Aiko. The same hunter who had held a knife pressed to Piper's throat.

"Where's Piper?" I asked.

Instead of answering, he snapped the front door closed with a loud bang. Instantly the room was enveloped in an even bigger darkness.

My breath hitched in my throat and I could almost feel the way my muscles began to constrict. I darted with my eyes all around the giant room, searching for even the tiniest opening that could serve as a means of escape. But there wasn't any. The only way out of here was the door in front of which the hunter still stood.

I was about to revert to my counting, so my racing heartbeat would settle down, when the tap of approaching footsteps filled my ears. Down the stairs across the room walked another figure, but because of the darkness I could only tell that it was a female.

"What have you done to Piper?" I asked before the female crossed even half the room toward me.

Only when she was less than five steps away from me, I finally saw more than her outline. From the bangs almost covering her eyes, to the proud way she carried herself. She was the only hunter apart from the one still blocking the door I would recognize.
