Hold on to me=======
Grace Kay's POV:
Voicestealer was gone by now but everyone's voices were either missing or very hoarse. (Except mine of course since Voicestealer had removed the muting spell from me by now) I assumed temporary, but I couldn't be sure. Several people had tried to explain to me how Voicestealer was using their voices but I couldn't understand what they were trying to communicate through their "sign language."
After I had given up trying to understand them, I just laid down and tried to sleep. I didn't think I would be able to considering I haven't had a good night's rest since... well since before my parents were alive and being kidnapped doesn't help either. But somehow the soft song of sleep found me and I was soon oblivious to the world.
BANG!
With a start, I woke up. Blinking until my vision corrected, I saw one of the guards had practically thrown a bowl on the ground where I could reach it. The spoon had bounced out but that didn't bother me at the moment.
He smirked, and I realized he had woken me up just for the fun of it. "Catch some beauty sleep?" he said mockingly.
My gaze darkened and I sat up, ready to swing a punch but the guard quickly left my cell before I had the chance. Picking up the bowl and reaching across for the fallen spoon, I saw inside was some sort of tan-colored mush. I dipped the spoon in and thrust it into my mouth. Swallowing, I tried not to make a face. It was disgusting, but it was (probably) editable food and not the worst I've had. Within a few minutes, it all gone and I had to resist the temptation to lick the bowl.
"Only a starving person could have eaten this stuff that fast." came a hoarse voice. It barely took me a few seconds to recognize the accent as Joel. Clearing my throat, I ignored his comment (even though it hit home) and said instead, "You've gotten your voice back I see."
Someone from further down called, "Yeah! The Aussie's got their precious accents back! I'm glad since lots of people would have died if they knew you lost your accents."
Luke retorted back with, "Including you I'm sure." Laughter echoed through the cells. Several minutes followed with the Smallbone brothers and several other people 'roasting' each other, (or at least roasting as an adult knew it) but it soon turned into a joke exchange. Most of the people involved were dads so many of the jokes were indeed dad-jokes that had me groaning on the inside for release.
One of the worse ones was: "What is brown and sticky? A stick!" Lots of laughter and a few groans from the sane people followed that one but I just put my hands over my ears and tried to silence them all. Without realizing, I started to quietly sing/hum one of my favorite songs. Little did I know, all the cells went silent until it was only my voice echoing off the walls. I didn't realize it until others starting joining in.
Broke Your heart a thousand times
But You've never left my side
You have always been here
For me
You never let me go
You never let me go
Don't ever let me go
When I got to the chorus again, I finally realized what was happening and stopped singing, cheeks turning red. The singing tampered off, and I sat with my head down, blond hair obscuring my vision.
"You have a beautiful voice, you know that? I love how you can put so much emotion into a song," said Joel softly. Silence until... "Only one other person had told me that and she's-" My voice broke and a sob leaped from my lips. I quickly covered my mouth to stifle the next. Silent tears ran down my face, and I hoped to death neither Joel nor Luke would look through the window.
However, Joel walked up to the window so I quickly turned my face but I could tell he knew I was crying without even looking. "Your parents aren't around anymore are they?" he asked quietly. A sob that my hand couldn't stifle echoed throughout the cells.
I didn't want to tell him the truth but before I could stop myself I let out a soft, "Yeah..."
Joel seemed to freeze for a moment as if he thought I would say no in the first place. "I'm sorry, love. I didn't know..." he said carefully. My head jerked up and I said stiffly, "Yeah, that's how it was supposed to be. You know, if I hadn't gone to that stupid concert I wouldn't be in this mess with magic and voices getting stolen and glowing orb thingies-"
"Stop!! Stop. Don't say another word... he could be listening..." Joel interrupted.
Confused, I asked, "Why does it matter?"
"No one can see the orbs, no one except... magic-users..." Joel explained in a whisper. I have magic? Yeah, right. Even if I did, why did it matter? "Voicestealer is looking for someone to pass his 'talents' on, a magic-user... like you but if you just don't let him know maybe you'll be fine-"
Joel's Australian accent was interrupted by a gruff, amused voice, "Oh, it's far too late for that. He already knows."
