➰Chapter I➰
She was starting to grow impatient. Her feet were starting to feel numb, and she would probably hurt someone unless she got something to drink soon. Needless to say, she was starting to regret having agreed to come to Pandemonium nightclub on a Friday night, when the place was at its busiest. For an all-ages club, the place was packed with people who appeared to be significantly older than her. Of course, everyone seemed older when you were just seventeen years old.
She watched as the bouncer denied yet another person entrance to the club, probably because they were too drunk or high to behave themselves.
"Would you stop fidgeting? You know how annoying that is," Walt said, scolding her for biting into her hair for no apparent reason. "It's really gross, too."
"You know, I wouldn't be doing this if you hadn't lied about that 'special-access' thing. I thought you said we would be escorted right in as soon as we got here?" She retorted, rolling her eyes.
"I might've slightly exaggerated the clearance of a 2x1 coupon," Walt admitted shyly. His eyes appeared to be as dark as the night, but it was his hair that made him handsome, she thought. Even though they'd been just friends for a long time, she was only now starting to realize that maybe she had had feelings for him that she hadn't noticed before. "Anyway, Andrea, it's not like you had anything better to do, other than stay home and binge-watch Riverdale for the eleventh time this summer."
Andrea knew he was right, but she couldn't let him know that. "It certainly would've beat standing in line for the past hour. Besides, you know I hate Pandemonium."
"Only because you're the odd one out," Walt retorted.
"Well, you can't blame for feeling that way, given that I'm pretty much the only Mundane stupid enough to come here," Andrea said, as she cautiously watched a pair of vampires biting into each other's necks in the corner.
"You're also a Mundane who can see the Shadow World, and that's very special," Walt nudged her arm gently and smiled. "Don't sell yourself short."
Andrea tried to ignore the warm feeling that surged through her as he touched her, shrugging it off as best as she could. But she wouldn't be able to deny it much further, and she knew that for certain. Before she could dwell on it any further, though, they were told to go right in by Pandemonium's front bouncer, and they didn't hesitate to follow his instructions.
Pandemonium smelled as gross as always. The horrid mix of Seelie perfumes and warlock sweat made the atmosphere almost toxic to her, but she had to admit, the colored lights made it seem like she had truly entered a magical dimmension of sorts. She had known about the Shadow World her entire life, about how there mythical creatures living among them. Most people weren't able to see through the Glamours, but not her. When she met Walter, things made a bit more sense, but not that much. He was surprised that she knew what he was--a werewolf--and that she wasn't scared of him. He explained that, even though it was rare, sometimes Mundanes, or regular humans, were able to see the Shadow World without much trouble, and that she was probably one of them.
Although the Shadow World amazed her, it also came with the constant burden of having to hide part of her life from her family, who weren't able to see it at all. It was a privilege, that was for sure, but sometimes it could feel like a curse.
"Don't look now, but there's a trio of Vamps behind you, looking like they want trouble," Walt told her, as she inevitably turned around to face them. Sure enough, the Vampires were staring at her the same way they would their prey, unaware that she knew what they were and what they wanted.
