chapter five | blood

The evening air was crisp and clean, the academy having been built a little ways away from civilisation, and far from the big cities, playing a large factor to the untainted air. It was something I loved about Cross Academy. My sense of calm was broken by the shrieks of girls and the commotion that was humans. That's right... Tomorrow is St. Xocolatl's Day.

With that thought playing in my mind, I slipped off from my place on the roof and jumped back down to the solid ground. Landing perfectly on my feet. I may not be anywhere near a 'pure breed', however I was as graceful as one. We vampires have an image to uphold, after all, to differentiate ourselves from those who were formerly human. Even us lesser beings on the pyramid.

Patting down my pockets, I checked if my wallet was on hand and the little red-silk pouch I had picked up was also still in my pockets. Happy that I hadn't left the two items in my dorm, my feet carried me to the headmaster's office once again to receive permission to leave the academy grounds. It was a taxing favour on both our parts, however, Headmaster Cross has always been kind enough to allow me to take leave to visit town.

With the advantage of inhuman speed, I found myself at the office doors in record time and knocked three times. "Enter." Headmaster Cross' voice echoed from behind the thick doors and I gently turned the handle before pushing the doors open.

"Headmaster, sorry to bother you however I was hoping to--oh. Did I interrupt something?" My voice trailed off into a shy whisper as my eyes showed me that there was another person speaking with the former vampire hunter, a man with jet-black hair and amber coloured eyes. The man, a vampire hunter, narrowed his visible eye as he turned to look in my direction, his glare sending chills down my spine.

Cutting in before the air became to awkward, Headmaster Cross addressed me cheerfully. "Ah, Gin, are you here for your usual request?" His smile was reassuring, "and don't mind Marcel, we were just finishing up."

Tensing at the name, I stiffly nodded and walked over when the ash blond haired man beckoned me over. I kept my gaze glued to the floor as I walked passed the vampire hunter, trying to ignore his stare.

Turning around, I lifted my short hair out of the way for Headmaster to clasp on the usual necklace. As he pulled out the charmed necklace from his desk, the man suddenly spoke up. "Why is she requesting for restraints?"

Headmaster Cross looked at me for permission before addressing the vampire hunter. "Ah, well Gin here wasn't requesting for it, however in a way she was. Gin here enjoys going into town often and sometime to run errand for me when my guardians are not available. Unfortunately the restraints are a condition to our agreement as per instructed by both sides."

Lies. It was Kuran's order.

I could not guess what the man was thinking, his expression had been a cold blank since I had entered the room, so his next string of words was a surprise. "I could go into town with her this time around, no need for the restraints."

What the man said surprised both myself and the headmaster. "Are you sure, Marcel? Gin here is perfectly capable on her own, never causes trouble as well."

"I have some business to take care of in town," the man walked over and plucked the necklace out of the headmaster's hands and placed it back on the desk, "besides, I trust your judgement of character."

Leaving no room for argument, the hunter walked out of the room in long strides. The headmaster gave me a nod to tell me that it was alright and I took that simple gesture as an order, my small feet rushing to catch up to the amber eyed huntsman.

While exiting the building, now side by side with the tall huntsman, we passed the Guardians of the school and my hazy eyes locked with eyes that were hazy only in colour. Zero Kiryu was someone who's eyes I always ended up finding, even in a crowd we would somehow meet each other's gaze. The sharp edge that polished his foggy eyes, the ever so present frown glued to his face.

I wonder what he looks like with a smile...

As the hunter, Marcel, and I strolled through the gates and started down the dirt road that lead to town I found myself speaking my thoughts out-loud. "What is the true reason as to why you offered to accompany me?" His eyes flickered to me but otherwise he made no other sign to show I had caught his attention. "Do you also think that I am too unstable to be left alone with humans? Me, a level C."

"You being a Common Blood has nothing to do with your sanity." His voice was low but his words were like a surprising shout to the ear. Most would not think this of my kind. "If Cross puts so much trust in you, then I see no reason as to restraining you, at least not in such a way."

Accepting his answer, mostly due to my mind still being in shock at his earlier words, I simply hummed a tone while nodding absentmindedly.
