chapter ten | bloody clover

It was beginning to become more chilly now, the autumn crisp preparing to welcome the winter's chilling bite. There was a slight buzz of commotion among the Night class, we were expecting a new student tonight; another vampire.

Little was known about this new vampire, however what was known was that it would be a new female student who came from a well known bloodline. Like everyone else in the Night Class.

I found myself chuckling a bit while listening to the daily routine of Hanabusa arguing with Ruka over the most trivial of things. Today it was over how Hanabusa had stolen her pen and somehow was now focusing on how Ruka was 'so not cute' which has resulted in the current situation. Pure comedy entertainment.

I was taken in by the Kain clan, making the bickering duo and bystander oaf my 'family'. And in every aspect but blood, they were. They had given to me what my blood never did; never could. The shattered pieces of my undying soul was slowly pieced together by their hands over time.

But had they pieced the pieces back together to what it once was?

Staring blankly down at my book, my mind wandered off to a scene of the past--a memory of a time that would never return.

With dull coloured eyes, eyes that were further hazed by the void of life behind them. Hair the colour of raven feathers, falling in a tangled heap to cascade down from the crown of a small head and down to bush at thin ankles.

The soft cotton material of the white sun dress I wore felt foreign to my scarred skin. The white colour pure and untouched by neither dirt, blood, grime nor time. The short sleeves did little to hide the burn marks and scars that littered my upper arms and collarbone area, colours ranging from an angry red to a dulled, darken tone to my natural skin colour.

Everything happening was new; everything different and my child staged brain wasn't able to comprehend whether or not this difference was a good thing or a threat. Good things never lasted, they existed to be ripped away.

In the most painful way possible.

"Akatsuki, this is Gin. Starting today, she's going to be your new little sister." The man behind me spoke to the boy who was seated at a dining table alone. Large hands placed gently on my shoulders in a protective and reassuring manner.

The boy simply nodded, which seemed to satisfy the man enough for him to give a few more words before taking his leave. Leaving the boy and myself alone in the dining hall.

Pushing away his plate, jumping down from his high chair, the boy walked up to me with uninterested and bored eyes. He had hair like fire and eyes the colour of embers, the baggy clothes he wore did little to hide how tall he was for someone around our age--the man had told me earlier I would be meeting someone my age. "Hanabusa is coming over later, help me hide all the sweets so he doesn't devour them all and get sick... Again..."

The boy took hold of my hand and started leading me around the mansion. Just like the man from before, this boy's hands were big and warm. They were different from what I was used to; they were solid yet gentle. Unlike the cold, painfully tight grip of the men dressed in white. Those self-proclaimed 'saviors of humanity' who would keep me in a rusted cell. Those false angels who would starve me, carve my flesh and drain my blood.

This boy was different. His presence did not frighten me, it did not acknowledge me. I existed in the same place and that was it. This boy was a void, but a gentle void. A safe void.

An unfamiliar voice giggled from the front of the classroom, catching everyone's attention. Looking up from my book, my sage green eyes met hues just as dusty as my own.

And the air stilled as time paused and the gears of change began to turn.

"My name is Maria Kurenai, I look forward to spending the rest of the year with everyone."

A/N: it's been a while, again. Oops. Sorry about that, this year has be absolute hell, as I'm sure you all are more than well aware of. My uni switched to online courses back in March, but a lot of my profs for this term have been... Difficult to say the least. Tuition also got doubled so I took a break from writing while I was spiraling into insanity and stress.

Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed the chapter and the little peep into Gin's backstory.
Things are about to kick into high gear and I'll be working on the next chapter this weekend, once I survive my midterms that is.

THIS IS ALSO THE END OF THE FIRST ARC SO YAYYYYYY!!!

Apologies for the lack of Zero×OC moments but I'm known for slow burn stories for a reason xD

Stay safe out there everyone!
Wear a mask,
Don't be a jackass,
And let's try get through the last few months of the shittiest year in the past several decade with at least a grain of sanity left.
