Chapter 2: Max

Zara's POV

"Zara?" A voice calls. it sounds far away.

"I think she's waking up." another voice says.

"Zara, are you awake?" the first voice asks.

It sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place it.

"Zara? Zara!" Another familiar voice.

"Zane, Falcon, calm down." the second voice said.

Zane.

Falcon.

I open my eyes half way.

"Zara, your awake!" Zane's voice says excitedly.

I smile. "Hey...little brother."

I hear Zane laugh, a rare experience.

"Only two minutes," he says. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, just a little dizzy. My head hurts."

Lucinda's voice reaches my ears.

"You did an extraordinary amount of magic," she said.

"Lucinda?" I ask.

"Yep. I've never heard of someone controlling another through magic. I've heard of Forever Potions sure, but nothing like what you've done."

I sit up. I'm in Lucinda's house, on the couch.

Falcon, my brothers, Aaron, Aphmau, Lucinda, and Asteria are all looking at me, smiling.

I look between Zane and Aph.

"I hope I didn't ruin any bond you had with my brother," I tell Aph.

She laughs. "No, you didn't. Zane knows I wasn't in control. So does Aaron."

Zane comes over and sits down next to me.

"It's just like you to worry about others when you've been unconscious for two hours."

I stand up and wince.

"Are you okay?" Falcon and Zane ask in unison.

"I'm fine," I lie. "Just a little dizzy. and sore."

I hold my right arm at the elbow with my left arm.

Just then, there's a knock on the door.

"I got it." I walk over and open the door.

A werewolf girl is looking back at me. She has bright red hair with black tips, and a scar across one of her bright yellow eyes.

"Hello?" I ask.

"Hi, are you Zara Ro'maeve?" the girl asks.

I nod and move to let her in.

"Are any of you Aphmau, by chance?" she asks.

"I am," Aph says. "Who are you?"

The girl sits up straighter. "My name is Max. Ein...was my twin brother."

I glance toward Asteria. she's fiddling with the locket Ein gave her.

"Is something wrong?" Max asked.

Asteria looks at her. "Ein was my fiance."

Max's eyes fill with worry. "Was? What do you mean by was?"

"Ein...died in a car crash," Aaron says.

Max's eyes fill with tears.

"Um...Max...I still have a way to talk to him," Asteria says.

Max looks up and notices the locket.

"Where did you get an Everrealm Necklace? Those are made only by incredibly difficult magic."

She shrugs and opens the locket.

"Ein?" she says.

"What's up Asteria?" Ein's voice comes from the locket.

"We're all here, and someone wants to talk with you."

"Who?"

Max walks closer.

"Ein?" she asks.

"Don't tell me...Max?" his voice says.

"It's me big brother."

"Why are you in Phoenix Drop?"

"Magic Tracking."

"Seriously?"

I clear my throat.

"Um....I gotta go big bro, love you."

"Back at you little sis. Bye Asteria!"

Asteria closed the locket.

"Magic Tracking?" Lucinda asked.

"Yeah. I felt someone else's magic come in today, so I followed the pull," she said.

"Come in?" Lucinda asked.

"Yes. Someone born with magic gained a new kind of magic. I follow the pull and help them understand, as well as find new types of magic."

Everyone looks at me.

"Um...I was born with magic." I say.

Max smiles at me.

"Well, then I think we're going to get along just fine."
