I look out the windshield at Sunnydale High School as my aunt pulls into a parking space. It was the same size as the private school I went to when my aunt and I lived in London, England. Why did we move to Sunndydale, California? My aunt says she found a better nursing job here, and I think she wants me to finally meet my dad.
"It's okay to be nervous, Vi," my aunt says to me.
"I've just only ever gone to private schools," I say, which wasn't a lie, but I was more nervous about running into my father, he was the school librarian after all. My aunt scoffs.
"You can handle this. You've been through a lot worse than a school mischievous one. My aunt roles her eyes.
"Behave, Veronica."
"Aunt Becca. Do you really not trust me? I was one of the best students at my last school," I say with a little laugh. My aunt smiles wider. I grab my things from the floorboard and get out of the car.
"I know but I wouldn't be able to go about my day without saying it," my aunt says with a grin.
"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Aunt Becca," I say as I grab the book I am currently reading from the dashboard.
"I love you, Vi. Have a good day at school."
"Love you, too. I will. Good luck at the hospital," I say.
"Thanks," my aunt says as I shut the car door. I wave as I walk towards the entrance of the school.
______________________________________________________________________________I enter the principals office and move toward the secretary's desk. "Hi, my name is Veronica Giles. I'm the new transfer student," I say politely as I shove my sunglasses into my purse. The secretary smiles at me when I introduce myself.
"Ah, Miss Giles. We were wondering when you would arrive. The other transfer just arrive 10 minutes before you did," the secretary says as she looks through the drawers of her desk until she found my file folder.
"Here you go, my dear. Your locker and combination are on the schedule," she says as I the paper.
"Thank you..... Mrs. Prince," I say and she just nods. I take that as a dismissal and I go find my locker. It takes some time to try and figure out how to work the damn American lockers.
"Shit," I say under my breath.
"Did you say something?" Says a female voice from behind me. I spun around immediately. The girl behind me had ginger hair. She was about my height and had green eyes.
"I tend to talk to myself sometimes. Sorry," I say politely.
"That's okay. Um... Quick question, are you new here?" Asked the girl.
"Is it that obvious?" I ask with a shaky laugh.
"A little and the news of two new girls is kind of big around here."
"I bet it is in this small town."
"Is there anything I can help you with? Like showing you to class?"
"Yes, please. Can you help me with my locker, first? It doesn't seem to like me," I say and the girl laughs. I give the girl my combination and she gets it open on the first try. I thank her and start to put away the books I don't need.
"I totally forgot I didn't introduce myself. My name is Willow Rosenberg. What's yours?" She asks. I hesitate for a quick second.
"Veronica......Veronica Giles. But people call me Vi," I say as I shut my locker. I look to her and gave her a knowing smile. I could see recognition in her eyes.
"Oh. That's a pretty name. Now where is your class?" Willow asks nervously. I could tell she knew something was going on because of my damn last name. I tell her and she takes me to my next class. When we arrive, I thank her and step into my first class.
