The guards fill the room with their guns tuck in their hands and surrounds me in protection.

“He just ran away! Like, vanish! What were you people doing around?! Leaving our most important project unguarded?!” I yell at all of them. “At least tell me you’ve found the intruder?”

They all greet my question in silence. Of course no intruder, you need one present to find one.

“Great job! Someone barges in this building and goes out, may I add, undetected by you all guards. This–“ I point towards the prototype.”–could’ve been in danger.  I want better. Better from you. You. And everyone in this room.” They all shout ‘yes, sir.’ “I’m changing the password for this room which will only be restricted to me. You got that?”

They all nod in unison.

“If I cannot remember the password or forcefully ask anyone to open it that means it’s not me, it’s a dummy or someone else and you all are ordered to arrest on the spot. No question asked. Am I clear now?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good. Now out. All of you, back to your places. Check all the records and see if anything is missing. Anything digital or physical, I want everything to be checked. Even slight misplacement of anything has to be informed to me. Go.” I grip my hair to feign frustration and watch them leave the room. I change the password and then retreat my steps back and walk out of the building to the U haul where the others are. I look over my shoulder to find no one watching and climb into it.

Everyone stand surrounding the prototype which is strap to the table the middle of the space. His whole arm is covered in needles which are sending the signals to the computers beside. Liam is monitoring his vitals and copying everything that will be needed to trace their success in genetic modification.

“You done yet?” I ask Liam as I change myself back.

“Just a minute or so…” he trails off, kicking the buttons furiously.

I notice others standing beside the prototype looking calm and satisfied with our work. It was good. Actually, better than good. Not giving the actual head access to the room is kind of fun, if you put it in Thomas’s words.

Thomas smiles at me and gives a thumbs up for our partnership, I nod in agreement. Ivy, on the other hand, gives me a lopsided grin. But Rick–

He’s sitting it the corner with his head tuck in between his knees, his hands clutching the back of his head. He looks sick and troubled so I walk over to him.

“All good?”

“Yeah, just a minor headache.”

“Your work's done here. From now on, we have nothing to do with you or Biointel. You can go back to your family, to safety.”

Eyes still closed, a ghost smile appear on his face and I can’t help but feel relieved from the burden he’s given me that day in my dorm. The child burden. Now he can go and live his ‘happily ever after' illusion with that Rebecca girl.

“You’re a good manipulator. Maybe we should keep you for our future projects.”

“Shut up and go drive Thomas. He’s done here with us and especially you.”

“I mean it, Licy. He can be a good pawn for us.”

“Shut up.” I grit my teeth so hard I feel the pain in my jaws.

“Don’t pay any heed to him, Rick. He loves messing with people’s mind.” Ivy comes and sits beside him. “You were good back there. You really were.”
