"Aw, come on, just take one. They're orange-flavored," Tonpa pleaded. I shook my head for the tenth time. "No thanks, Tonpa. I'm not thirsty." I also have an eerie feeling about those drinks, and my instincts are usually on point.
There were around 80 applicants now, and I'd been waiting almost an hour. I also didn't have any possessions, so as one would assume, I was incredibly bored. All I could do was wonder how I'd gotten here in the first place and stare at the crowd of people. And I was not about to talk to any of them, besides Garo and Silas. They all looked... freaky. Some of them were dressed like aliens.
I'd been sitting against the cave wall (still trying to remember something about this so-called Hunter Exam) when a chubby man in blue with the badge number 16 came up to me. He introduced himself as Tonpa and looked pretty proud for someone who'd failed the exam 34 times now.
He provided information on some of the applicants I'd been wondering about. I realized that there were no kids here (or anyone who even looked below 20) in the crowd. It made me stand out a bit, and people kept glancing at me and whispering. It was honestly really nerve-racking, and I had to resist the urge to get up and leave.
Now, as a "toast to friendship," Tonpa was trying to make me drink this orange juice stuff. He was trying so hard, it made me suspicious. I also had an ominous feeling in my gut- and it was telling me not to trust him. I didn't like him from the start anyway.
"Are you sure? You might get thirsty later," he said and held out one of the cans. My patience finally snapped. "You're really pissing me off. I don't want your drink, just leave already." He was shaking so much, it was hard not to burst out laughing. Without a word, he shoved the can back into his satchel and scurried off. And for some reason, the people around me stepped back a bit. I fought the urge to snicker as I turned around. Was I really that intimidating? Me, a (technically) 12-year-old girl?
In the corner of my eye, I could see the same creepy clown (Tonpa told me his name was Hisoka) smiling at me, flicking a group of cards in his hand. Ew. I frowned and walked away, as far away as I could get from him. He gave off seriously bad vibes- I didn't want to be anywhere near him. It looked like the other applicants thought so too, because most of them steered clear from him.
I surveyed the crowd. Let's see... around ninety people now, maybe? Or a hundred? I heard the elevator ding behind me again. Great, another person to keep track of. Some of the applicants turned around to see the newcomer, including me. The rest, who were apparently uninterested, kept on chatting quietly or doing their own thing.
Let's see who... My stomach dropped as the doors slid open. No, that's... impossible. Why? No...
How?
