"What are three things you see as you look around?
What are three things you hear?
What are three things you smell?
What are three things that you can touch?
Ok, now you really have to get your imaginative juices flowing. Keep answering the questions; story ideas should begin to creep in.
Who are three people present in this place? (you can briefly describe them)
How did they get here?
Now, think about why these people are here. Are they all together? Or did they come separately? And... here is where the conflict comes in... do they want to stay or leave? Go ahead and answer the final questions!
If your characters (or one or two of them) want to leave, why do they want to leave? Make sure this is an important reason. If they want to stay, why do they want to stay?
Finally, what is keeping them from either staying or leaving? This is your problem or conflict. How are they going to get around this problem?"
When you look around there's nothing but a field and sidewalk for miles, like a trail. There are cherry blossom trees scattered around that cause the petals to softly land on the trail. The only things you can hear are your own footsteps, the wind, and the possible music playing on an old iPod touch as you walk down the trail. You can smell freshly cut grass and the faint smell from the cherry blossom trees, and maybe water once you pass by a lake or pond. You can touch the rocks, bushes, and the path that leads to a rocky trail.
There are two girls and a little boy. The little boy is hugging his older sisters leg as his sister listens to music with one earbud out. The other girl is shorter than the first, she's not related to them but she's a close friend to them both.
They had walked a couple of miles from their house as they would usually do every day together.
They all want to stay, but the shorter girl only wants to stay because it's the only time the taller girl will pay attention or listen to her. They end up getting lost though and, even though the shorter girl still wants to walk around, the other two want to leave because they're starting to get scared and hungry, and the little boy needs to use the bathroom.
