1. It's time to have some fun

"Well girls, as you probably already know, every year the high school organizes a trip where we stay in a youth hostel. During this trip, you'll go on some excursions in the morning and participate in evening activities organized by the hostel, like a disco, karaoke, and more," announced Miss Parker, our homeroom teacher.

"Oh my god, I've been waiting for this for years! We'll have the best time of our lives," shouts my best friend Hannah cheerfully. We've been inseparable since we started at this school. Now, you might be wondering where we are.

Welcome to Harrington Private School, an all-girls institution. Here, we don't get to meet any boys unless we sneak out on weekends, which is nearly impossible due to the strict security. How do I cope without boys around? Well, if you've never experienced being around boys, you don't really miss it.

"Miss Parker, will there be other schools staying there as well?" one of my classmates asks, hoping that there might be boys.

"We usually don't coincide with other schools, but there's always the possibility of meeting up with another girls' school," Miss Parker replies.

"There's no way I can stand being away from boys any longer," someone mutters at the back of the class, and the teacher seems to hear it.

"Well, I've lived all my youth without boys around, and you don't see me complaining, right?" Miss Parker says as she hands out the permission slips. "I want these signed and returned by the end of the week."

"Yes, Miss," everyone responds in unison.

"Shh, shhh." Hannah and I exchange confused glances before looking around, only to spot the last member of our girl squad peeking from the other side of the door. What the hell is she up to?

"What the hell is she doing out there?" I ask Hannah, who is trying to communicate with Amy.

"She was probably late again, so they didn't let her in. As always," Hannah shrugs, rolling her eyes.

"I will never understand how she can be late when she lives a five-minute walk from here."

"You know Amy, she's incredibly lazy," Hannah replies with a smirk.

The class proceeds at a leisurely pace, with no one really paying attention to what the teacher is saying. Everyone's thoughts are already on the upcoming high school trip. The bell rings, and we start packing up our things. We were about to leave when the teacher asked us to stay for a moment.

"Girls, I forgot to mention at the beginning of the class that the rooms at the hostel are for four people. I want the groups formed before the trip. I do not want any problems, so I hope you handle the only thing that is up to you smoothly. Now, you can leave. See you tomorrow!"

Hannah and I exchange worried looks, realizing there's a potential issue. There are only three of us, and we don't want to end up with someone we have no relationship with. We decide to wait for all our classmates to leave so we can discuss the situation with the teacher in private.

"Miss Parker, could we talk to you for a moment?" Hannah asked, a bit unsure of the response. Miss Parker is well-known for being hard to convince, so we try to keep our hopes low.

"Of course, is there any problem?", she asks, leaning on the edge of the table with her arms folded, waiting for our answer.

"Is there any chance that the three of us could have a room of our own? We don't get along well enough with the others to share a room with one of them," I ask, and she gives me a hard look.

"Is that what you wanted to tell me?" I nod. "And what did I say before?"

"No boys?" Hannah says not knowing what the teacher wants to hear from us.

I said: no problems. So behave like the adults you are. There are no other types of rooms, so I expect you to fix your problems yourselves." I look down in embarrassment as I walk out of the class where Amy is waiting for us.

"Wow, what happened?" Amy asks, worried.

"We need to find a new roommate for the trip," I say, sitting on the nearby bench outside.

"Well, it can't be that difficult, right?" Hannah supposes. "Amy, you have more friends than us in class, do you have any idea of someone with whom we can share a room?"

"I can ask", she shurgs, "but I can't promise anything"

"I'll be happy as long as it's not someone who i dislike." I say hopeful.

"Is there any person who you don't dislike apart from us?" Amy asks in a sarcastic tone.

"Yeah, Amy's right. You don't talk to anyone else," Hannah adds.

"Oh, I'm sorry if my being shy is a problem for you," I roll my eyes before changing the subject to avoid further argument. "Well, how is Tommy?"

Tommy is Hannah's boyfriend. She's always talking about how perfect and loving he is, but we haven't met him yet. As far as I know, he lives on the other side of the city, so they don't get to see each other on weekdays.

"He's been busy with some sports stuff. He's trying to get a scholarship to go to Oxford," she announces happily. On one hand, I'm glad my best friend found such a good guy for her, but on the other hand, I feel like she's hiding something. Suddenly, she stands up and says goodbye. "See you later."

"Are you thinking the same thing?" Amy asks me as we head to our dorms after classes.

"That depends. What are you thinking?"

"Hannah is behaving in a strange way. I don't know, she doesn't seem as Hannah-like as usual."

"Yeah, I get what you mean. Well, this is my room. See you tomorrow!," I say as I enter my room and start my homework.
