Chapter 9

"I'm bored!" I groaned. "And hungry. And thirsty. Can we go somewhere?"

"I suppose we have some time to kill before we kill Camilla once and for all. Wanna go to a ghost club, Devon?" Samantha asked.

"A what now?" I responded.

"What?! He can't go! He's far too young to be going to the Spirit House!" Collin exclaimed.

"What a buzzkill, eh?" Mabelle snickered.

"Definitely." I agreed. "Please Collin? I wanna see more dead people!"

"Nope. Not in the way you're acting." Collin said, turning his back and crossing his arms.

"You're not my dad!"

Collin shook his head. "No."

"You were young and experimental once. why not let this poor boy go? Look at this face!" Samantha cooed, squishing my face into fish lips.

Collin sighed. "Fine! But only this once."

"Yay!" I triumphed. "Ghost club!"

"Ghost club!" Samantha whooped.

"Wait, how do we get there?" I asked.

Samantha smiled and grabbed a lipstick tube out of her pocket. At first I was confused, but upon twisting the cap, a great blue beam shot out, probably blinding us all. It formed a sort of pulsing, bright portal.

"Whoa! What the shit?!" I exclaimed excitedly. "That's fucking awesome!"

"Hell yeah it is," Samantha agreed. "Mabelle, dear, are you coming along?"

"Nope. Can't stand all that noise and hootennanny." Mabelle said, lying back on a sofa.

"Okay. Well, goodbye, and take care of the ghost koi, dear."

As we stepped into the portal, I could faintly hear a saxophone blowing and a lady singing the blues. "Oh, an old timey club."

"Welcome to the Spirit House, Devon. Been around since the Civil War." Collin said, sitting down at a dining table.

"Whoa, cool. Who's the lady singing?"

"That, son, is Francesca Bolina, she's an Italian singer. She was very famous during my time. Died of hypothermia. I used to be in love with her until..."

"Until what?" I asked.

"Until I married a man."

"Aww, cute. Who was he?"

"His name was Andrew Sam and..." A soft smile formed on Collin's face. "...and I loved him."
