chapter 2
The moment i came back to consciousness was the moment all that had happened came rushing back. I had trespassed. Walked right into someone else's place. When people were there, on top of it all! And all i could think was; i'm so stupid.
Then, i realized that whoever hit me over the head hadn't kicked me back out. I was covered with something warm but there was also something cool and wet on my face. I opened my eyes to see a rundown ceiling and walls in the same condition. Through one of the holes in the wall, i could see that it was dark and raining outside. Great. I was amazed that none of the water was coming inside.
The warmth that was covering me was actually a blanket. I have to say, it wasn't the nicest thing to have on me. It had patches and holes all over, along with stains and it smelled like dirt. I lifted my hand to the thing on my forehead and took it off. It felt weird and i recognized it as moss, but it had this darker color to it. Upon closer inspection, i realized what it was. Blood. I put my other hand to my head where i got hit and winced. It was my blood. I guess when i got hit, i also got cut. Sighing, i put the moss back on my face.
A movement in the corner of my eye caught my attention. I turned my head to the side, only to see the person who had smacked me over the head crouched over something. It was a girl, i realized startled. And she was crouched over my bag. She was staring at it as if it was the oddest thing in the world.
As if feeling me looking at her, she raised her eyes to meet my gaze and froze.
This girl seemed to be around my age, 16-17 years. she had such red hair that it looked as if it were on fire. She had freckles surrounding her intense green eyes like a mask and her face held no trace of acne on her strong features that were colored a nice golden shade from the sun.
I sat up to look at her more closely but she jumped up and stepped back, her expression gone from neutral to cautious. She was wearing an old, ripped tank-top-which was very revealing due to a missing shoulder strap and that it was a few sizes to small- and a pair of short, tattered cut-offs that were again too small for her. And, like everything else in here, she was covered in dirt from head to toe. Whoa, i thought to myself, Hey, there!
" Umm...Hi."
When she didn't respond, I was confused. I thought, maybe if....
Wait, I told myself, info first--flirt later.
I started getting up but when she stepped back once more, i understood. She didn't trust me. She was scared that i would jump at her. Okay. No sudden movements. I stood slowly and went over to my bag. There was a muffled ringing coming from inside. Pulling it out i saw that it was my mother. Uh-oh.
I answered.
" Hello?"
" Tristan!!" came her hysterical voice from the other end," Where the hell have you been?! I've been calling and texting you for the past hour!!"
" Yeah, sorry about that. I sort of fell asleep."
"Alright then, but where are you?"
"Uhhh... I'm at a friends house?" By the uncertainty in my voice, it sounded more like a question. I looked over at the girl, who was staring at me, and thought that since i'd be stuck here until the rain stopped, i guess we could get to be friends.
"Okay, but once the rain stops completely i want you to come home." My mom said sounding tired.
"yes i will, see ya"
"Love you." she said before hanging up.
I sighed and checked the time. It was nearly 11 o'clock. despite having been unconscious for more or less 5 hours, seeing the time made my eyelids even heavier than they were before. Just then i heard my ring tone. I looked down at my phone and... no one was calling. to make sure of this i put it to my ear but the sound was coming from elsewhere. I looked up to pin-point the sound and my eyes fell on the girl.
What the....I thought.
what i was hearing and seeing at that moment completely blew my mind. The girl was mimicking my ring-tone. She had managed to fool me into thinking that it was my own phone, the imitation was that perfect! What i was hearing now was completely wicked and unbelievable.
As she made this sound, she was staring at my phone in my hand, but when she looked up and caught me staring, she immediately crouched defensively and pulled something from her back pocket.
A knife.
My reaction was to raise my hand into the air and step to back. She stared me down, literally, until I was ling back down on the blanket. Once i was down, she started to relax a bit. She sat down by the dying fire and restocked it. we sat in silence for a long time before i drifted off into sleep.
