"It's so beautiful, don't you think?" I turn my head towards Mason, my boyfriend of 2 years. He took me to his parents beach house on Crystal Beach for my birthday. I lay my cheek on my knee and run my fingers through the sand.

"Yeah, it's pretty." He's laying on his back, one arm up and tucked under his head, looking at his phone.

"Mason, you aren't even looking." I whine. I roll on my stomach and snatch his phone from him and toss it on the other side of him. "You are missing the sunset." His blonde hair blows in his blue eyes from the wind, and I reach over and smooth it up.

"Emma, what did I tell you about grabbing my phone from my hands?" he says sternly. He huffs, stands up, and walks over to the back porch of the house. Leaving me. All alone.

I roll my eyes and walk down to the water, toeing a shell into the wet ground. The sky really is gorgeous tonight. Pinks and blues and yellows. I wish Mason would enjoy it with me, but I know he is stressed about medical school.

Once the sky was mostly made of dark purples and blacks I made my way back into the house.

It's completely dark except for the soft light over the oven that always pisses Mason off that I leave on. I walk into the kitchen and grab a water from the fridge and turn off the light for him.

"Emma?" His deep voice grumbles from the other side of the door, just right before I turn the knob.

"Yes, babe." I smile at him. He is all showered and tucked into bed, his face in his phone. "What are you looking at?" I ask softly. He looks up at me quickly before looking back at his screen.

"Nothing." he says, no emotion in his voice.

"O-kay...well I'm gonna get in the shower." I nod my head slowly and walk backwards into the master bathroom. "You wanna watch that new Marvel movie when I get out? I rented it when we got here this morning." I ask with a smile on my face. I love action and horror movies, and even though he doesn't really care for them, I am hoping he will put it on for me because it's my birthday.

"I would babe, but I am really tired. It's gonna be a no for me." He reaches up and turns off his lamp before rolling over on his side, facing away from me.

"Okay, it's fine. Umm, good night. I'll see you in the morning." he grumbles a good night as I shut the door. Stripping off my clothes, I reach one hand into the shower and turn the dial all the way, hoping the hot water will wash away all the tension built up in my shoulders. My phone on the counter top buzzes, making my jump a little.  It's Amber, my best friend.

"Hey, girly! How's Mason and the beach house?" her voice is a little muffled with surrounding voices.

"It's going. Where are you?" I asked impatiently.

"I'm at that new club in Uptown Houston. You need to come with me when you get back. Speaking of which, when will you be back?"

"Uh, I think early Monday morning," I say trying to recall the plans, "Mason only wanted to be gone over the weekend."

"Yeah, makes sense. Okay well, I gotta go. I love you best friend!"

"Love you, too" I pulled the phone away from my ear and roll my eyes. I hope she has a ride back to our place in College Station. I can totally tell she is intoxicated.

I let the water run down me until I prune and my skin turns pink. I have long light brown hair that is a freaking pain to get into a towel to dry, and because of it's wavy form, it takes twelve years to dry. After I have finished my night routine, I throw on my white silk button nightshirt and red lace panties and re-enter the bedroom. Mason is fast asleep by the time I have myself tucked in. I understand that he is being distant because of the stress on school, but I do hope that our trip does start to look up.

After all, it is my birthday weekend.
