The sun and a cold bed wakes me up this morning. My hand roams the sheets trying to find Mason, but he is nowhere to be found. I roll over and reach for my phone, see that the time is 7:16 in the morning. I huff and throw my legs over the bed and rap my robe around me before setting out to find him.

"Yes, yes, I am looking forward to our meeting." a deep voice grumbles quietly into the receiver of a phone. "Don't worry about that, it will be so amaz-"

"Mason?" I ask, still half asleep.

"I am going to have to call you back." he tells the over end, before ending the call with an irritated expression. "What, Emma?" he scrubs his hands over his face. He turns away from me and grabs a mug and the coffee pot.

"Good morning. Oh, coffee sounds good." I say with a lazy smile on my face. He nods unenthusiastically and sips on his cup.

"oh -kay." I make my own cup and kiss his cheek. "Who was that on the phone?" I ask as I reach the recliner.

    "Someone from work."

"Babe, is something wrong? You seem a little... tense." I ask gently.

"Yes I'm fine. You always pry." he steps in front of me and cups my jaw in his hand, slowly moving his thumb back and forth. "What would you like to do today?"

"I was thinking maybe we could chill on the beach till lunch or something? Then we could order take out and watch that movie I was talking about. And you were saying you wanted to go out to that fancy restaurant, so we could do that for dinner." I smile and lean into his palm. He smiles back at me and nods his head.

"Sounds like a plan. I'll go put on my swim trunks." He kisses my cheek and walks into the bedroom. I shake my head, glad that he is back to his old self. I push myself up, but quickly sit back down because of the intense pressure in the front of my head. Once the spinning stops, I make my way into the bedroom.

    Damn Vertigo.

After I pull on my royal blue triangle bikini, I go to the deck connected to the bedroom. Mason has a cigarette in between his teeth and is typing something on his phone. He looks up at me for a moment. "You're pale. Another episode?" he says as he stands up. I nod and look down at the ground. "You'll live." He reaches his hands up and stretches, allowing a strip of pale, hard skin to show.

"I know. You ready?" I smile up and him and wrap my arms around his midsection. He nods and I take his hand and walk down to the water. The already hot sand in between my toes calms my nerves in a way nothing else can. I jog into the crisp waves, laughing lightly as the splash of my calfs meeting the water hits my face. I love the laughter of the little kids and parents starting out their day with building sand castles and taking a swim. I twirl in the water, turning to face Mason, who has his damn head down in his phone.

    Well, now I'm pissed.

"Okay..." I say to myself as I walk out of the water and over to my completely disconnected boyfriend. "Mason, what the hell is so important on your phone that you can't be with me on my birthday? My 21st birthday, non the less." I put one hand on my hip and the other takes his phone from him and throws it down on the stack of towels. He stands up defensively with a hard scowl on his perfectly sculpted face.

"EMMA!" he screams as he gets in my face. I drop my arms from my waist and take a step back. "Do NOT take my phone from me again. Do you hear me?"

"Don't raise your voice at me, Mason. Who are you talking to?" I am not going to let him deflect this question so easily.

"No one you have to concern yourself with." He crosses his arms over his chest and squints his blue eyes at me.

"Stop talking to me as if I am a child." I lower my voice and smile at the mother staring at us. She looks between me and Mason before minding her own and watching her little boy run back to her with a bucket of water.

"Then maybe you shouldn't act like one, Emma Lane." He only uses my full first name when he is mad. Lovely.

"I think maybe we should go home. You can deal with whatever it is you are dealing with over the phone in person." I walk past him and lean down to wrap a towel around my waist.

I walk into the house alone and go straight to the master bathroom. I grab my toiletries bag and start packing up my shower things. I hear his heavy footsteps from around the corner before he slams the door open. "Oh, you are just the most dramatic female ever!" He starts tossing his things in his bags. Luckily for me, I never unpacked my things last night, so I just change into jeans and a t-shirt before making my way to Mason's Range Rover. I put all my things in the backseat and go clean out the coffee pot while I wait for Mason to be ready. "Emma, It was someone from work. They need me to fill in for one of the other Interns at the hospital."

"Okay, well let's get you back then." I grab my phone and toss him the keys. "Really, lets go." I turn on my heels and head out to the car.

The car ride is silent, but the tension is crazy loud. I bring my knees to my chest, but he tells me to get my feet off the leather. I turn up the music, and he turns it completely off. I try to talk about the weather but he says he has a call to make.

So I'm reading on my phone while trying to drown out the conversation he is having with another doctor.

I did convince him to go through Sonic, where he laughs at my order: One medium Lemonade Slush with Nerd candies mixed in.

Once we make it back to my apartment, he kisses my cheek and tells me he will call me tonight, and drives off.

Amber is laying on the couch when I walk in. "Hey, birthday girl! What are you doing back?" She sits up and comes over to me. "Where's Mason?" she looks behind me before settling back on me.

"We had a fight, and I told him that he should just bring me back." I set my purse on the white granite countertop and grab a water from the fridge.

"Well, we can go to a bar? You are within the legal age now? Happy Birthday, by the way." she shakes my shoulders.

"It's only noon. And you know I don't like birthdays. And that I have already tasted alcohol so it's not a big deal." I plop myself down on the couch and unpause the recorded episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians. "I thought we agreed not to watch this episode without each other?"
"Oh, no no. You don't get to do that. We are having dinner here and I am inviting Mason. I haven't seen him in forever." she throws herself down next to me. "Right now, we are gonna get our nails done at that place that has a bar in the salon. Get ready, we leave in 10!" she slaps my knee and prances her skinny self into her room.

Oh boy, this should be fun.
