The ride to the hospital took about 45 minutes. We didn't talk the rest of the way, but it didn't feel awkward or stuffy because we jammed out to some early 2000's rock...which embarrassed Amber to no end that it is my favorite.

Not that she is here to change the music.

We pull up around 8:45, just in time for Fin's therapy. Apparently, this is his last try to see if this will shrink his tumors.

Shawn was out of the truck before I could get my seat belt off. He opens my door smoothly and reaches his hands up for me to jump down. I slide to the edge of the seat and put my hands gently on his shoulders and jump. He eases me to the ground as if I weigh nothing. Just like the night before, he rests his hand in between my shoulders and guides me to the door and straight up to Fin's room. His walk and posture is very intimidating, yet soft. In the elevator, I sway back and forth to the horrible music. I am standing in front of him, but the mirrored walls let me catch a glimpse of my mystery man. He is watching me out of the corner of his eye, the corner of his lips pulled into a sly smile.

Outside of Fin's room paces Diane, and her husband who's name I don't remember catching last night. "Shawn." she notices him first, then turns to me. "You never had a chance to introduce me to her last night." She smiles big for the first time. I smile back. He has his mama's smile.

"Hi, Mrs. Micheals. I'm Emma Lane." I reach out my hand to her, but pulls me into a hug.

"You don't know how good it is to meet you." she says sweetly. O-kay. Shawn taps her shoulder, signaling her to let go. She pulls away, keeping her hands on my shoulders and smiling kindly.

"Mom, you should go down to my truck to get the coffee. I need to talk to Remy." He says from behind me.

"Okay,"- she grabs his keys. "Emma Lane, would you mind coming with me? I don't know where he is parked."

"Mom, I don't think-" Shawn declines.

"I would love to!" I drawl. I give shawn a "be nice" look and start walking back the way we came. His mom looks much better than she was last night, so I assume Fin is doing as well as he can this morning.

As we stepped into the elevator, I notice the smile of her face grows larger. She chuckles to herself softly before turning to look at me completely.

"You know," she starts, "My Shawn has never brought anyone to meet us before,"  oh-no. Before I can stop her assumption, she continues. "I can see the way he looks at you. It reminds me of my Sam." her eyes saddened. "Now, don't get me wrong, I love the boy's dad so much it hurts but you're honest, real, true, first love hits you in a way you can't fathom to forget." she stares off the side like she is reminiscing in a memory.

"If you don't mind me asking, why aren't you with your Sam?" I ask very quietly.

"Sam was just too good for this world, you know? And God knew that, so he called him home." she reached up and rubs my shoulder softly. I mumble a sorry excuse for an apology. "Honey love, you weren't driving the truck that took him out." the elevator dings, signaling that we have reached the ground level.

I lead us out and hold the outer door open for her and look back and forth before spotting Shawns monster truck. Halfway to the truck she looks at me. "I want to thank you for being here for S. He is taking this the hardest."

"Of course. I couldn't understand his pain, especially with his remission." I say softly as I reach his truck. Her eyes go wide, making me panic. I hope I didn't pass any line of respect.

"He told you?" She starts to tear up.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Micheals, I didn't mean to-" She wraps her arms so tight around me, the wind is knocked out of my chest.

"Child, don't be sorry. You are giving me my son back."
