Ridgephos-Ridgedog and Xephos
The distorted cries and growls from various test subjects faded as Xephos made his way further up the corridor. He held his head high, a blank mask of indifference to suffering and pain that he had caused. Cold blue eyes stared straight ahead, piercing bright in the now dimly lit YogLabs facility. Night time brought darkness. Darkness that even a high-tech laboratory like his couldn't escape. A shame, for someone who created something so advanced, so threatening, so powerful, couldn't stop the thing he feared. The floodlights Xephos had installed flickered. He flinched, cursing. Damn spiders must have gotten to some cables. He'd have to go sort it out, or risk the black night creeping in, engulfing him and suffocating the light-
"Oh Xeph, you looked terrified! Your face was a picture then!" The voice shook with laughter. Xephos sighed shakily and turned round.
"Very funny Ridge. Now fix the goddamn lights!"
The Demi-God appeared, hovering lazily a few inches off the floor and an amused smirk on his face. He wore his usual navy and gold trimmed coat and had a standard issue lab coat draped over one arm. "Oh but it's too precious when you get scared! It's the only time I get to see any emotion from y-"
"I always have wondered how a Demi-God works," Xephos mused. "I've never had a chance yet to see for myself..."
Ridge smirked. "You won't be getting a chance any time soon, either. Like I'd let you do one of your crazy ass experiments on me!"
"Well if you fix the bloody lights then maybe I'll forget about that idea..."
"Why, you scared of the ghosts?" Ridge laughs. "Wooooooooo!" He swoops low over Xephos' head, wailing and moaning.
Xephos rolls his eyes. "No, I'm not scared of things that don't exist," he replies firmly. Ridge lands in front of him, still smirking at the other mans fear. "There's nothing that can harm us, so there is nothing to be scared of."
"What about the dark?"
Something changed in Xephos' expression. He winced at something, a memory of some sort, before recomposing himself and brushing off the question. "There's nothing wrong with the dark. Why would anyone be afraid of it?" He laughed. "That's pathetic..."
"Mum? Dad?" the little boy cried, arms stretched out, feeling his way through the dark. "Will?" his voice grew more and more desperate, more frantic. The boy's eyes were glowing a light blue, but they wouldn't chase away the blackness.
He stumbled, his body hit the ground. The boy didn't try to get up. He just lay there and cried. He yelled for his parents, his brother, someone to find him. He had heard his parents yelling earlier, but it was dark and he couldn't find them and they hadn't answered him when he yelled for them.
"Xeph?" Arms scooped him up off the ground and hugged him. "Oh thank goodness, I thought you were gone!"
"Will!" Xephos buried his face into his big brothers shoulder, wiping his tears away on his red shirt. "Where's mum and dad?" Silence. "Will?"
"I'm sorry Xeph. I'm so sorry..."
"Xeph?" A voice called.
"Will?" He snapped back to reality. Will wasn't there. He didn't know where his brother was. He hadn't seen him for years. He didn't know if he was alright...
What if he was dead?
Xephos broke down. He leaned against a wall, slowly sliding to the floor. Quiet sobs racked his body and tears streamed down his face faster than he could wipe them away. He felt lost, lost again like the little boy who had cried for his parents in the dark, and had never trusted the night since that day. The monsters came out in the night, they wanted to kill him. Even with Will there he couldn't chase them away.
Someone put an arm around his shoulder, so Xephos rested his head on theirs, trying to calm himself down.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Ridge asked softly, not wanting to upset the spaceman even more. Xephos took a deep breath.
"When I was five, I lived in a house with my mum, dad, and my brother Will. We lived in a more dangerous part of our planet. My father was a guard and he patrolled a huge wall each night to protect us from the monsters on the other side." Slowly, Xephos ran a hand through his dark hair before closing his eyes and continuing.
"One night, there was a breach in the wall. A lot of monsters got through and cut our city's power supply. We lost all light and heat and they broke into houses. They killed so many people, and my mum...i couldn't find her. My dad always said he would find us if anything happened and I heard him downstairs before but there was yelling and I could hear the monsters so I hid under the bed. They didn't answer me and I couldn't see anything it was too dark and I couldn't find Will or mum or dad I was lost I didn't know what was going on." Xephos started hyperventilating at the memories, panic filled his sad eyes. He had turned pale and shaking as he recalled that night.
Carefully, Ridge pulled Xephos into a hug. He moved his hand in circles on his back, rocking him back and forth. "Relax, nothing is going to hurt you. I'm here," he whispered. They say on the marble corridor floor for a while before either of them spoke again.
"I miss them," Xephos said quietly. "Sometimes I wonder if Will ever got into a science career like he wanted. I wish I knew." He sighed. "After that night, I've not been able to see Halloween as anything but horrific."
"It's alright. Everyone has days that they hate. You're strong enough to get through it, and that's what matters," Ridge smiled comfortingly at him. "Now lets get you some coffee to help you relax, I overheard one of the doctors saying the coffee machine's been fixed."
Happy Halloween! I hope you all get lots of sweets! I'm a flux infected cat today! Does this mean I could be Tiddles?
Also Magic Police exploded tumblr and it is a beautiful sight.
