Wren and MacCready got word that Sturges finally completed the signal interceptor. Anxiety and excitement coursed through the both of them. While Wren had been planning on this for months, she still felt reluctant about the situation. The entire journey back to Sanctuary was filled with thoughts of what-ifs and worst case scenarios. MacCready knew her well enough to sense the change in her.
"It'll be okay, Wren." He would tell her.
Knowing that MacCready had her back gave her some stability throughout the whole ordeal but she still felt on edge at times.
They arrived at Sanctuary and crossed the bridge where they were greeted by Preston. He escorted them to the area where the massive machine sat. From a distance everything seemed fine, but as they neared the hunk of machine it was clear that it towered them all. Wren suddenly felt as if she were in over her head. Sturges babbled on about the machine but it was all just noise in her ears. She stared up at the machine and swallowed hard. This would the craziest thing she's done thus far.
She felt a nudge and quickly looked over. MacCready offered her a smile and words of good faith.
"He knows exactly what he's doing, Wren. We're in good hands."
She let out a weak laugh.
"Y-Yea.." Her words fell short as she held a hand to the back of her neck. The feeling of holding herself helped calm her nerves but it wasn't enough to quell the fear stirring inside of her.
She walked around the area as Sturges showed her what each piece was meant for while MacCready stood back and watched. He tried to keep his cool for her sake but he too was experiencing his own share of anxiety. What they were trying to attempt would be a huge risk, and even worse is that it solely involves Wren. Over the course of their time together, she had become the one person he grew to truly care for in the Commonwealth. He didn't want anything to change that. If something were to happen to her, he didn't know what he would do.
With tensions running high, they decided it would be best if they waited until tomorrow to fire the machine up. MacCready and Wren retreated to a nearby vacant house until then.
The two spent time talking and laughing like they normally would but there was still a tense feeling that hung heavy in the air. They both felt the pressure of the fore-coming events. MacCready took a moment to excuse himself, saying something about "lightening the mood" and Wren was left alone with a whirlwind of thoughts. All of her efforts brought her to this point and tomorrow she'd see her son and take him away from the Institute. It seemed unreal.
She sat there on the edge of the bed, her eyes fixating on the floor, her foot tapping away. She couldn't rest her mind no matter how hard she tried. Her eyes wandered to the table where her pipboy rested.
She had put it off since the moment Codsworth gave it to her, but the thought of that holotape from Nate kept nagging at her. She had her reasons for not listening to it but now that she was one day away from finding Shaun, this moment seemed as good as any other. She rose from the bed and hastily grabbed the pipboy and fumbled through her bag that laid on the floor. She pulled the holotape out and returned to her previous spot. She turned the tape over in her hand studying its shape, thinking about what kind of message it held. Her brows knit together as she wondered if she was doing the right thing. She took a wavering breath and slowly clicked the tape into the pipboy that laid in her lap. Static..
Nate's voice suddenly came through the speaker and Wren wasn't ready for the flood of emotions that hit her. She put a hand to her mouth to keep from crying out. A heavy sadness grew inside her and she hung her head. It's been so long but listening to the voices of her late husband and child brought her back to before the war, before the destruction and death. The tape clicked off and silence filled the room once more. Her heart was heavy as she slowly moved the pipboy to the side. She stared at her empty hands as she tried to hold back her tears but her strength was waning. Soft sobs escaped her and she was quick to hide her face behind her hands. There was a feeling of regret in the pit of her stomach but Nate was gone and she needed this to help move on from the past. If she could deal with her feelings surrounding Nate, she'd be able to fully devote herself to her son, who she knew deep inside was still alive and waiting for her.
Just outside the door stood MacCready, bottles in hand. He leaned his back against the wall, brows furrowing. He was deep in thought as he sorted through his sadness and empathy. He knew her pain, he understood how she was feeling as her muffled cries drifted into the hallway. His heart reached out to her, but there was a slight hint of jealousy that pulled at his strings. He was on her six since the moment they met and even now she couldn't open up to him regarding her issues? Perhaps it went deeper than that..
He shook his feelings, there was no time to dwell on himself when Wren was in such a sensitive state. He needed to be there for her in any way he could. He shook his head and calmed his nerves. He waited.
Once she quieted, he gave it a moment and knocked on the frame. He peeked his head in and entered with a warm smile and as much alcohol he could carry in tow.
