Gray Fullbuster

The fight between Igneel and Acnologia raged from above like a storm. The roars and howls from the two creatures that shouldn't exist were filling the skies like thunder, and the various flashes of red against blue collided like unholy lightning.

If there was one thing Gray never thought he would see during his lifetime, living to see dragons quarrel was definitely the top number on his list. Even though the dragon slayers insisted that their dragons were very much real and very much like how they appear in legends, actually seeing them was a whole other story.

It was almost poetic.

Mard Geer looked up at the titans fighting in the sky with his face still calm and posed, though it was easy to see the fascination twinkling in his eyes. "So, it seems Acnologia has arrived," he mused. "How interesting. Either he has come for the chaos or he has come for the master himself."

The book of E.N.D. was cradled in his arms, the worn leather of the cover almost shining against the moonlight. Just by looking at it, Gray felt like he was looking at something truly cursed. No wonder why Silver wanted it gone; that thing felt like a bad omen, the apocalypse waiting to happen.

Could such an evil thing really exist?

At his side, Natsu's hand curled into a tight fist. "We're not letting you release your boss," he snarled. Bright orange and yellow flames danced around Natsu's fist and the slayer's eyes narrowed dangerously. "And we sure as hell aren't gonna let you eradicate all magic!" Gray would never admit it, but it was at times like this that he truly admired Natsu. He was an idiot with a big mouth, sure, but he had this confidence that was so uplifting and contagious that it was hard not to be inspired by his idiocy.

At his declaration, Mard Geer sneered.

"I don't really care for overconfidence, human."

Natsu dashed forward with his body alit with flames, and just like that, all hell broke loose. Gray and Natsu, despite their differences, their rivalry, somehow fought in perfect sync against the Lord of Demons. Mard Geer was strong. Really, really fucking strong. Even with his ice devil slayer magic, Gray found it harder and harder to return every attack with the same vigor. Alone, Gray would have had no chance of winning this fight, but a certain pink-haired mage was there whenever Gray found himself falling behind, following up every frosty attack with his own scorching one.

Finally, after many minutes of intense clashing, they managed to best the strongest demon of Tartaros with a devil's arrow through the gut.

Natsu and Gray stood together, side by side, and looked down at the fallen body of the demon. Natsu and Gray looked at each other, grinned, and bumped their fists together victoriously.

From above, Igneel bellowed as he and Acnologia went plummeting out of the sky and into the hills beyond.

"So..." Gray panted, the blood was hot against his body and the air felt uncomfortable and numb against his skin, but still he stood and glared down at the fallen demon. "This... is the bastard?... Ugh... Fucker knew how to throw a fight..."

Natsu spat blood onto the pavement. "He ain't shit compared to Fairy Tail," he grunted. "So, what now? It looks like Igneel's got Acnologia for now. We should go and help the others."

"You go on ahead," Gray said, and switched his glare from the fire dragon slayer to the discarded book on the floor. He walked over and picked it up, the weight heavy in his arms. This is the book that apparently contained the master of Tartaros, the book that Zeref-- the man indirectly responsible for the destruction of his family and the suffering of his father, Silver-- created, and the book that Acnologia apparently came for. His grip tightened on the leather. "I still have one last thing to do."
