“The first 40 minutes before a storm are the worst. The Earth is silent. The trees are not moving; the birds are not singing; everyone is buckled down. Everything is still; bracing itself if you must; for what it knows is coming…An invisible force that will rip apart even the strongest foundations at their very core.  There is nothing that can be done in the prevention of a storm; but only to rebuild when the damage is done.”

COLE’S POV:

I clicked my laptop closed and put it in its bag. This was the finishing touch to my packing. I folded the letter and placed it in a purple envelope. I kissed the envelope leaving a lipstick mark like a seal. I took a sharpie and wrote: The worst part of all… I thought I actually had a chance with you.

I placed the envelope on the edge of the bed and took one last look around the room. I had no regrets; none.  I had booked myself into a hotel for the night and I didn’t know where it was going from there. I didn’t care.

ZAYN’S POV:

I had been standing outside Cole’s door for 15 minutes, just re-running exactly what I was going to say.  It had to be good. Liam had told me that I needed to listen. Listen to what. I have known Cole for 14 years. I know everything about her already… don’t I?

I knocked three times on the door and didn’t hear a reply. Maybe she’s still asleep, she has been in hospital having nurses and doctors probe at her for the past three days. I quietly entered the room.

It was bare. Not a single piece of clothing on the floor. I opened the wardrobe and the dressers, the same thing in both of them. I looked around the room. Cole had taken down all of the pictures of Harper, Grace, Sam, I and her back in Bradford.  Her suitcase was gone and all that remained was a single purple envelope on the bed. I turned it over: The worst part of all… I thought I actually had a chance with you.

She had left a lipstick mark underneath the words. What is she talking about? I ripped open the envelope and four pieces of paper fell out. Three looked like pages ripped out of a book or diary, and one a letter. I began reading…

November 31 2010:

Dear Diary,

I know I haven’t visited you in a while, It’s been a couple of hectic months since Zayn left for X-factor. He was put in a band with four other guys and they have been doing really well. I’m so proud of him. He has managed to come so far and people are going crazy for them. I have been watching their video diaries. They are really funny and I can totally understand why girls everywhere are falling for them. Watching him perform on TV each week is a welcome distraction from the real problems in my life. This is the only place that I can truly talk to “someone” about what is happening, here go’s.

After Zayn first got accepted through to judges houses with his band it became clear that he was going to go far. Everyone at school was thrilled for him, including Lillian. She was always so nice to me at school; we were both rooting for Zayn to do well. I knew that he had promised her once he was finished with X-factor; winner or not, he would come back for her. That’s where the problem really begins. A couple of weeks later rumours were spreading about One Direction’s Zayn Malik dating Rebecca Ferguson. She told everyone at school that she was fine with the rumours, that we had no idea if they were true or not.
