The Morning

It was a bright summer morning. Rays of light beamed through the petite gap in the curtain. Whilst her best friend Ría lay in a deep sleep, Lea opened her heavy eyes with a slight strain, the memories of the night before flooding back in. She longed for the first few minutes of waking up, when all the thoughts she had ever had weren't lingering on her shoulders.
She slipped out bed careful not to wake her best friend. When she checked the time it was only 7:38 and a dry sensation coated her mouth; making it near impossible to go back to sleep.
After grabbing a glass of water from the kitchen, she was concerned she wouldn't be able to succumb to the temptations of sleep. As she had suspected, her body was restless and was itching for a morning run. Her body needed to be free, her mind needed to be relieved.
Lea reached to her draw and pulled out a pair of gym shorts and a tank top. She gazed into the mirror as she pulled her long brown hair into a ponytail, she had always stuck out in her community. Everyone there had blond hair and blue eyes, even her best friend Ria and her mum and dad. But she was different: she had tan skin and straight brown hair. Her face was dotted with freckles and her eyes were an unspeakable shade of emerald green. They always had reminded her of nature, as if it was flowing through her body. Her features make it obvious that she was adopted. Although she knew that she was adopted, as her best friend's family adopted her when she was five, she could of passed as their biological daughter if it wasn't for her unusual features.
Pulling on her sneakers, she peeked through the gap in the curtain to see what the weather was. Rays of sunlight beamed through the gaps in the trees; creating a collidescope of green and yellow. Small flowers of purple and blue blossomed, and the whole world felt at peace.
She bolted out the doorway, taking in the sweet smell of early-morning due, distracted from what she knew was coming when she got back. People had always teased her by accusing that wherever she went nature followed and today she was trying to avoid being any more different than what she was already. But she couldn't help noticing peculiar occurrences. For instance, the other day she went by a patch of dead grass, however when she returned to the same spot later in the day, the grass was thriving; coated in a beautiful green blanket with blossoming tulips and daisies. She didn't want this to happen, in fact it was the opposite. Recently she had been questioning if these were, in fact, occurrences. Recently she had been questioning a lot.
Lea had been running for a while, when she noticed where her feet had taken her too: the edge of the forest. She had been so caught up in her thoughts, that she had brought herself to the edge of a place that was forbidden to all citizens. It was so strange and different to the modern town they lived in. From what she could see, every twist and turn had something unique about it, unlike the cultural homogeneity of our society. The woods had always held a place in Lea's heart, which was strange as she had never been in there, only caught glances of it from afar.
Knowing that cameras from the government were watching her from every angle, it would be suspicious to stand there for too long and if her parents found out she would be in deep trouble, she ran back. Every bound she took away from the mysterious land behind her, strengthened her desire to be there.
