Packing a bag wasn't hard as they didn't really need much. Lea removed the tags from her new backpack, which was made of rope and faux leather and was loose with a flappy, fold-over lid. The backpack conveniently matched her outfit. Inside she stuffed in some pencils and a small pad, her earphones, a new novel she had received and a Rubik's Cube ( this was a necessity as when she was nervous her hands began to fidget). Ria, meanwhile, stuffed in a sketch pad for her designs, a bag of gummy worms to share and her earphones as well.
"Lea, I know you fidget but do you really need all of that?" Ría questioned.
"Hmmm...let me think: yes! I mean considering that came from the girl who has packed a sketch pad and no pencils" Lea smirked and started wheezing uncontrollably as Ría fumbled over her art supplies, cursing occasionally.
"Shit Lea, how did you even notice that! I swear to god you took my attention abilities when we adopted you!" They both burst into further fits of laughter before hearing a familiar voice.
"Girls hurry up! You haven't got all day and they won't wait for you!" As their dads' voice boomed up the stairs, they both grabbed their stuff and tried to suppress their laughter.
It wasn't customary for parents to bring their kids; so they made their way by themselves. Although they were best friends at home, when it came to social life's Ría was very much ahead of Lea. Over the years at school, Ría and Lea kind of drifted apart as Lea was constantly shunned for her looks and strange behaviour. Lea didn't mind though, she was more introverted; she had never longed to be social or make lots of friends: she was fine by herself.
Five minutes into walking, a large group of girls and a few boys from the other school in the district approached us well, more like they approached Ría...
Ría's perspective
I love Lea, I really do, platonically. Ever since we met in nursery (Kindergarten for any Americans) we have been best friends. But recently it's been hard on me. She is just very different to everyone else, to me: she has changed. I know that we are all changing but she is changing differently from everyone else. I can tell she is comfortable around me but she is sort of shy, and that is fine. But, it doesn't really help with her overall image; everyone already thinks she looks weird she doesn't have to make it so "easy for them to pick on her" oh god did I say that out loud?
"Sorry, what did you say?" Lia questioned me.
"Haha sorry, nothing I was singing some....lyrics!" Judging from the look on her face, j figured she had heard what I said. Right on time, my friends swooped in to save me, greeting me with smiles and hellos I peeled away from Lea. Marcus, my boyfriend, had brought a little something to ease everyone's nerves: vodka. He had obviously taken it from his parents' cabinet or something since he wasn't old enough to buy it. He is around 15 and most of the people here are nearly that age too. I am very nearly 14, my birthday is in a week so I figured it would be fine, I also have done this before. A person from the back of the group told me to check the time as I held on to Marcus's arm. " Eleven fifteen! Should we make a pit stop at the field then?" I smirked as a chorus of agreement sounded.
Once we reached the field, we sat and drank, staring at the sky. There were actually two bottles between the 7 of us so we just handed them around accordingly. I took a sip, the clear liquid fell down my throat as I resisted the urge to cough. I had drunk this before but the first sip was always the worst. I continued taking swigs as the bottles were passed around, each time the sips getting bigger until they practically gulped. We were all having a great time, I chugged the last quarter of the bottle whilst my friends chanted along, which was quite difficult but of well. I was still sitting on the ground and, honestly, I didn't feel drunk at all. I checked the time: 12:00; we still had a while and the building wasn't ages away! Thinking about it we got to the field at 12:30 so I have had quite a lot to drink in that time but I swear I'm not drunk. I looked over at Marcus who met my gaze and said with slightly slurred words " You alright?"
"Yeah, I don't feel that drunk though, and I have had a lot to drink!"
"Really? Have you tried standing up last time that was when it kicked in!" He smirked and chuckled at the memory.
"Oh. Oh yeah, but I'm still not sure" I replied. Honestly, I am quite proud of myself for not being a lightweight. I look around and see most of my friends giggling drunkenly. How come I'm not like that? I stood up to go take a walk and right on cue that is where it kicked in.
" hey, babe where you going?" Marcus came after me as I walked away slightly.
" I dOnt KnOw" I giggled and slurred out, stumbling over my feet. "wHerE aRe yOu gOinG?" Wow, I was really funny. I started laughing at Marcus and the joke I made.
"Ría I think you are drunk like really drunk," He said whilst joining me on the ground. Wait when did I get down here?
" nO yoU aRe!" I slurred out slightly angry at him.
" Ría you need to be careful your powers could kick in if you have any and they're dangerous if you're not in control"
I giggled not really comprehending what he had just said, "wHaT?" I continued giggling.
I hushed my voice to whisper to him, "cOmE heRe-"
He came close to me and I kissed him, he went with it as I brought my hands to his temples. Suddenly, I felt I strange pulse from my heart through my hands to him: my powers, that was enough to sober me up. He all of a sudden kissed back harder as he pulled us closer together. What is happening? Why did he just start kissing back? "Wh-what are you doing?" is said releasing my hands from him.
Narrator perspective
Marcus stopped suddenly and looked at where he was. He recoiled "what the hell was that! Ría what the hell was that," he said in a scared tone.
"I don't know I think I just got my powers?" She replied staring at her hand in disbelieve and bewilderment. "Oh I- oh don't be sad it's not your fault," he said comforting Ría as she began to sob.
" I wasn't meant to find out until later on. That was horrible I made you feel what drunken me felt" she said in between sobs.
"It's fine I know it wasn't on purpose how about we start heading to the Ceremony since you're not really as drunk any more" Ría nodded in agreement as they started to walk.
