Jayne's body heavily leaned on the railing of the balcony, her arms crossed as her body pressed into them. A heavy sigh released from her as she crossed her legs and stuck her back, bending over to get more comfortable. She watched as a crew of Shoreline boats pulled up to the marina that spread across the beach front below the hotel. Her heart sank as she clearly saw Nadine exit the boat, but no sign of Rafe.
She battled with herself whether or not she should go down there, but she told herself she would probably hate herself if she did, so she turned around and poured a glass of wine and sat herself on the plushy patio furniture that sat in the corner of the shaded deck.
After about a half an hour, she heard the door to the penthouse suite open and a set of feet slowly made their way into the room. "Jayne?" Nadine's thickly accented voice called as Jayne leaned her head into the room and motioned for Nadine to come to the balcony. "Nadine." Jayne said as the amazonian woman leaned her backside against the balcony railing, her arms crossing as she noticed the wine glass in Jayne's hand.
"Where's Rafe?" Jayne calmly asked as Nadine turned her head and squinted at the low hanging sun in the sky. "You seem awfully relaxed for not knowing where your husband is."
Jayne let out an amused breath from her nose. "Just been spending the last few days preparing myself for the worst, Nadine. Where is he?" Nadine sighed as she pushed herself away from the railing and took a step towards Jayne. "I'm not going to lie to you, Jayne. I couldn't tell you if he was alive or dead even if I wanted to. I left him to fight it out with Nathan and Sam." Nadine shook her head as she pressed her palms against the railing. Jayne let out a breath as she stood from her relaxed position and joined Nadine, her arms hanging over the railing as she held her wine in one hand and closed her eyes allowing the tears to begin building under her eyelids before opening them.
"So you don't even know about Nate or Sam then, I assume..." Jayne sighed out. Nadine breathed a harsh and heavy breath through her nose as she turned her head to look at the saddened woman. "I couldn't say. My men and I did see a flare shoot up as we were leaving on our boats, but I'm not sure who it would've been. Victor's plane answered it." Jayne nodded as she took a sip of her wine and threw the glass at the side of the hotel causing it to shatter on impact. Nadine tightly closed her eyes, her hand wanting to reach out and comfort Jayne, but her hard exterior stopped her.
"Fucking treasure. I hope you at least got some of it." Jayne said in a huff, her breath turning rigid. "Yes, but most of it goes towards payment of this expedition. My men got as much as they could." Nadine said as Jayne's eyes narrowed at her, her arms crossing in front of her chest.
"Nadine, this was never about money for me, but you're being serious right now? Truly, serious? If Rafe is gone like you assume he is, you're not leaving me a dime, are you?"
"Oh Jayne. You hardly need the money now if Rafe is gone." Nadine scoffed at her which awarded her with a harsh look as Jayne pressed her hand into hips. "That may be, Nadine. But if my husband died trying to get that damned treasure, I believe I deserve something of it."
Nadine gave a light chuckle as she patted Jayne on the back. "You're hardly in a position of arranging a deal, darling. If Rafe's gone, I get his share by default. You were never in the arrangement."
"You're lying." Jayne retorted. "Rafe wouldn't leave his share of the treasure to you, even if he didn't make it out alive. He was too obsessed."
"That may be, but you can't prove it, Jayne." Nadine said as she brushed shoulders with Jayne. "I'll be stopping in Scotland to grab my things in a few days. Tah for now, Jayne."
Jayne huffed as the door closed, her eyes watering from the anger and saddness that she suddenly felt.
