"This is supposed to be a special event, right? Please tell me you don't plan on going like that," Vertina, the spectral mirror, berated. Sophie looked down at her attire, frowning. She wore a black-to-red hombre dress that came down to her knees, along with tennis shoes.
"What's wrong with it?" she questioned.
Vertina let out an exasperated sigh. "Look at yourself! Your hair is unstyled and bland, you're wearing sneakers, and there isn't even a trace of makeup on your face!"
Sophie pursed her lips. "Is that a bad thing?"
Vertina seemed like steam was about to start blowing out her ears. "Yes! Yes it is!" she hissed.
"Like how?" the ticked off elf deadpannd.
"There's nothing that makes you... Pop. Nothing that makes you special. You'll blend in with everyone else!" the girl in the mirror exclaimed.
"That's kinda the point," Sophie pointed out.
Vertina made a clicking sound with her tongue. "No, that simply won't do. You're going to do as I say, and you're going to be fabulous!"
"You know I can just walk away, right?" Sophie retorted.
Instead of getting mad and threatening her, like she'd expected, the mirror made puppy dog eyes. "Please, Sophie? I never get to do these things anymore, since Jolie..." Her voice trailed off.
Jolie was Grady and Edaline's biological daughter, but she died in a fire, which was found out just a few months earlier to be caused by her own fiancé. It was a touchy subject, and totally unfair to use against Sophie.
She groaned. "Fine! But just so you know, that is way not fair," she scowled.
Vertina's face lit up. "Yay! Alright, so first off..."

A while later, Sophie was back at the mirror, but this time, her hair was in double dutch fishtail braids on top and in low ponytails on the bottom, and instead of sneakers, she wore knee-high black boots. Ruby red lipstick colored her lips, black eyeliner lining her eyes, following the apparent black and red theme for the Blood Moon Bash.
"Uhm... I'm not sure about this," she mumbled.
"Nonsense," Vertina chimed back. "The bash is starting soon, you should get going."
The dolled-up elf narrowed her eyes at her reflection. "Actually, it's starting in half an hour."
"Actually," Edaline chirped as she poked her head into the room. "We're leaving early."
"30 minutes early?" Sophie inquired.
Her mother walked up to her, placing her hands on the blonde-haired elf's shoulders. Her long, silky black dress contrasted against her bright red eyeshadow and lipstick. "We... have something set up, and we'd like to get there a bit earlier," she said softly. "And you look amazing, Sophie."
Grumbling, she followed her mom out of the room, grabbing her hooded black cloak which hung by the door, clasping it around her neck.
Grady was there waiting downstairs, in a black and red tux. He smiled at them as they descended the stairs. "You look wonderful. Both of you."
Sophie only kicked at the ground, mumbling curses. Her hand traced the hilt of one of her twin katanas, which were retractable, so they could be hidden easier. They were strapped to both sides of her waist under her dress, in case of any trouble. She somehow felt safer tracing the ridges and indentations of the lethal weapons.
