"You know, when I first met you I thought you were a real bitch," Caroline blurted out.
"What changed your mind?" Scarlett couldn't help but ask.
"Oh no, I still think you're a bitch. I just somehow learned to like that characteristic about you."
Scarlett smirked at Caroline's words, feeling satisfied with her statement. Caroline opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something else, but Scarlett suddenly screeched to a stop near the tree line down a steep hill. She held up her hand and turned her head at a slight angle, listening for the same beeping sound she heard just moments before.
Meanwhile, William was typing something, Scarlett couldn't possibly care less, on his phone.
Just as she predicted, she heard the same soft, rhythmic beeping vibrating through the air.
"Wha-"
"Shut it!" Scarlett hissed before turning to face William.
"William," she didn't even try to hide the slight edge of her voice. "Please tell me that you're making that sound. And if you are, can you stop?"
William looked up from his screen and met Scarlett's questioning gaze with one of his own. "What sound?"
"Shit!" Scarlett went to unfasten her seatbelt. "Get out of the ca-"
Before she could finish her sentence, a vehichle suddenly slammed into them from the left, sending them tumbling over the side of the hill.
(AN: if I wanted to be a real b¡tch, I would've stopped the chapter right here xD but I'm not Scarlett soo continue on with your reading!)
"Fuck!" Scarlett coughed as she pushed against the dented in door, trying to get herself in a somewhat upright position. After a few seconds of struggling, she huffed in frustration before turning her head to the passenger's side.
William was unconscious and upside down, strapped tightly against the seat with the safety buckle from the vehicle, the airbag already deflated.
"Sca- Scarlett?" Caroline's raspy voice from the backseat managed to reach her ears through all the ringing and... beeping? It was then that Scarlett remembered the bomb.
"Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!" A string of more incoherent curse words followed as she quickly unfastened herself before kicking her door open.
She scrambled to the passenger's side, hurrying to help an unconscious William out of the car. At the same time she heard Caroline's breathing picking up. This was, of course, not a good thing. She couldn't have Caroline in a panicked state right now. Not when there was a bomb counting down in the car that could explode at any given moment.
"Caroline!" Scarlett yelled as she proceeded to drag William through the dirt by his arms. "I know you can hear me. I need you to get out of the car and help me with William, okay? Just take deep breaths and unfasten your seatbelt for me."
Scarlett's voice cracked near the end of her very short pep talk as she placed William in a sitting position on the opposite side of the tree, facing away from the car.
She made sure he was stable enough before turning back to the vehicle. "Ca-"
An explosion rung out through the air and Scarlett flew back, hitting her back hard against a tree from the force of the blast.
"No!" She stood up, ignoring the pain lacing through her limbs as she went running full speed to the source of the explosion. "Caroline!" She skidded to a stop, searching around for Caroline in the jumbled mess of car pieces left over from the explosion.
"Please, please, please be okay. Gods... not now, not today." Her body shook violently as she circled the remnants. For the first time in a long period, for the first time since she killed her apparent parents, Scarlett felt vulnerable. This was not how this mission was planned to-
The mission!
She raked her fingers through her hair. "Shit."
Yep, this was defenitely a sign that Leonardo was starting to get impatient with her, but messing with Scarlett's mission was not the way to go. She was pissed.
Hopeless rage boiled inside her. She felt like she was a pawn in one big game, like she was slowly being railroaded into all of this and like her options were all being taken away from her
Now she had to take care of the aftermath om her own. Scarlett sighed.
Through all the haze and abundance of disorientation, she couldn't help but laugh at the one thought circling in her mind.
"Cayden is defenitely going to kill me."
