As Scarlett ascended the stairs quietly in bare feet, she reflected on the last few weeks she spent undercover. It was, by far, the longest time period she'd ever wasted on a mission. Usually she would get whatever needs to be done finished in just a few days, but for some reason something kept hold of her in the enemy's rank. She wanted to stay in Cayden's embrace and enjoy the tingling warmth of his touch.
It didn't matter though. Caroline was suffering because of her recklessness in not finishing this mission sooner.
She stopped and closed her eyes to help steady herself. Christopher was going to have her ass for this.
Was this really how she had to live for the rest of her life? Always on her own, because no matter where she went or what she did, she always had the life of someone else in her hands.
As sick as it sounds, she still wanted to continue with her job. She loved doing what she did and didn't quite fall into the job; she sought it out- Working in the darkness to serve the light, that's what it's all about.
Scarlett exhaled slowly as her eyes opened back up to focus on the large, expensive office door near the end of the corridor on the third floor.
This was stupid. Why was she even questioning herself? Thoughts like this never bothered her on her other missions before and she didn't even need to take someone's life on this one.
From the moment her eyes met his for the very first time, even on his mugshot, she knew something was different about him and she knew that it was going to be hard keeping secrets, but here she was, barely, still hiding the fact that she is one of the world's most notorious killers from him. Either way, she made it this far because she kept up her small facade, not even imagining the thought of getting caught.
Maybe she wanted to get caught.
As messed up as that sounded, Scarlett smiled at the thought. If she got caught, she would be caught. Then she'd maybe make him understand her conce-
She shook her head so hard that a painful throb started at the back of her skull. No, she had to finish this mission just for the sake of everyone else's protection. What was she even thinking?
Today the game would defenitely end.
Today, she would finish the mission and go back home. Once and for all.

From inside Cayden's home office, Scarlett had already ruffled through every possible drawer and still she couldn't find any unusual files other than normal gang related activities. Opening another file only proved her annoyance. Drug trade transactions? Italian Mafia reports? Nothing that Christopher would really want. Scarlett went to put everything back in its original place when another folder hooked her eye. It was a draft of a partnership between Christopher and some secret establishment named GenerationX.
This folder was defenitely what Christopher wanted if it concerned him and Scarlett would have taken it and straight up given it to him, no doubt, seeing as this pieces of paper was his one way ticket to taking over the role as "best and most feared gang in America", but a contract concerning human trafficking put all her plans to a temporary pause.
The more she read, the more her blood started boiling and the more she just wanted to crawl into a dark hole and partially die. This was exactly what almost happened to her years ago and triggered the beginning of all her trauma. If James hadn't saved her and taken her place, who knows what would've happened to her? Something defenitely even more ill-fitted than your usual abusive stepfather hammering on a daily basis.
