"Scarlett!" William's frantic voice screeched through the receiving end of the burner phone as she just about managed to pull it away from her ear with a noticable grimace.
"Afternoon, Willia-" she barely managed to get in a full sentence of formal greeting when she heard abrupt shuffling from the other side as his voice took on a more desperate tone.
"Holy shit, hold on! I have to tell Cayden about thi-"
"There is no need," she interrupted him quickly, her hands automatically tightening around the device about the mere thought of a certain gang leader. "I called you for a reason and I would like to keep that between us for a little while longer. If I wanted to speak to Cayden, I would have put in the effort to track down his number and dial him personally."
"Oh... wait! How did you even manage to find my number?"
"Through yellow pages." Scarlett rolled her eyes, pinching the bride of her nose. "I am an assassin of sort, William. How the hell do you think I found it?"
An awkward silence followed and Scarlett released a sigh of indignation.
"Look, I am sorry. Things have been a bit stressed out lately. How is everyone at the gang house?"
Scarlett brought her thumb to her lips as she started chewing on the edge of her nail, a habit that she wasn't very familiar with, but one that did the job either way in calming her nerves to some degree.
She really didn't have the time for chit-chat with William right now, knowing that she was a walking target out in the open after her big disappearing act with Christopher, but she needed to make sure that she got on the same page with William before asking for certain demands. If this meant asking useless questions that might cause emotional turmoil in the short term, then so be it.
"Oh... Not so good, if I'm being honest. After Caroline's return last month, Cayden all but freaked out as he was in some big state of denial. I'm sure you can understand. It's not every day your baby sister revives from the dead, ya know?"
Scarlett winced at the thick sarcasm lacing his words. "She told him what happened?"
"You have no idea. It was like being back in kindergarten. You know, having a teacher gather all the little ones, preparing them for story time. She went in so much detail that even I felt like the one that was being kidnapped."
"Ho-how..." she cleared her throat. "How did he handle it?"
She heard the uncomfortable tone behind William's laugh and she knew without further explanation that what he was about to answer would not be anything other than more bad news.
"He was pissed, all right. First of all, because you lied to him about his own sister being dead and not to mention the fact that you left-"
"He told me to rid myself from his life, William. I was not the one to make that final decision."
"Oh, for God's sake, Scarlett! You know the guy is head over heels for you. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say he's in love with you!"
Scarlett tensed.
"He didn't literally mean that you had to leave, and if he did... well, he's an emotional asshole that wasnt in the right state of mind. Either way, you don't really get to make decisions at the end of the day and get away with it without dealing with the consequences. You broke a sacred oath by leaving us, dude. One that you made months ago by swearing yourself into the gang. There isn't an easy way out and yet-"
"I am pregnant, William."
"Oh, you're pregnant? That's wonderful! Just throw that into the conversation as well. It's not like I'm giving an important pep talk or anything... You know what, Scarlett? I always thought that I'd be pregnant one day, but that- wait... shut up! You're pregnant?!"
