Yoru snorted along the ground as he swept his head along the ground. It was easier to see when the sounds were bouncing right back.
Black Mist followed, keeping his eyes on Yoru's tail, which was sweeping around. That was a way for Yoru to make sure that Black Mist was following. As long as something was moving in the dark, the Dark Number would be able to see where the Darkling was.
Yoru's milky white eyes landed on a cracked spot, which indicated that there was a possible hole. He snorted again and waved his glowing tail. Black Mist took it as an affirmative sign and smiled.
"You're the best, Yoru!" he complimented. "I don't know what I would do without you!"
Yoru's mouth cracked into a smile as he squeezed through. It was a bit small, but that wasn't really a big big problem. After all, they were both small enough. Yoru just happened to be a bit wider than the hole's width. It was a little struggle, but Yoru got through, followed by Black Mist, who slid through as if he were covered in oil.
Both Darkling and Number emerged into the daylight. A day must have passed.
Black Mist patted Yoru's snout and smiled. "I'll be back tomorrow, maybe. I'll have to make sure no one follows me, though."
"Okay. Beware of the Hunters. They may still be lurking around."
"I will." Black Mist jumped up into a tree and climbed high and fast, like the squirrels in the human world.
As soon as he was at the top, he surveyed the area. He was thrown off quite a bit by the chase, but he could still map out a rough path back to his town. It would take a while, though.
Black Mist shrugged and jumped down. He landed with his feet on the ground and took off running. Flying would attract the Hunters since they looked for anything that their prey did. In his case, they knew he floated. They had seen him on multiple occasions.
As he sped along the ground, he followed the mental map he made when he was looking over the forest canopy. It had a lot of twists and turns, but it was the most effective route, if not a little long.
Behind him, Black Mist heard the roars of he Hunters following him. Shit! They're still at it!?
The Dark Number picked up the pace, his feet a blur as he raced ahead. His slender build made it easier to speed ahead, what with all the wind just sliding past.
He looked back, grinning at the sight if the Hunters falling behind. That'll show 'em! He chuckled and made it into a town.
Black Mist immediately ducked behind a building. Regular Numbers were minding their own business with shopping and taking their kids on walks with their hatchling pets and talking with their friends. He sneered at this. They had no idea what a hard life was. They only had to worry about Dark Numbers possibly invading.
Not that it happened often. Dark Numbers liked their space. Sure, they were cruel and uncaring, but they also protected the people or things they loved. Plus, attacking a town didn't really accomplish anything special.
Black Mist made a cloak out of his ooze. It was black, and it had a hood, so no one could see his face. He walked out from behind the building and floated through the town.
