"How long you gonna stare at the sky, Lucas?" Joseph says.
"I hear something" I whisper
Loki's ears perk up and he stops in his tracks.
"Hold!" I yell to the squad
Everyone stops and stares at Loki.
RRRRRRRSH
"Fighter, hit the dirt!"
The whole squad flops to the ground like drowning fish. a fighter screams over us.
"Move, move!" lieutenant Barthet screams to the squad.
We run to the north, towards the evac site. The fighters never come alone, they scout us out then drop troops into the zone then chase us out of there like a game of cat and mouse.
But they aren't chasing us this time. Loki stops, frozen. I tug on his color but he won't budge.
"Stop!" I yell.
Everyone stops, like pausing a DVD nobody moves.
Loki barks and pulls on his leash towards the tree line.
ZZZZIIP
a bullet flies just to the left of my head. Almost three seconds pass as everyone sits in awe of what just happened. Then everything around me erupts into gunfire. I don't even know what I'm shooting anymore, I don't care.
"Hold your fire!" The lieutenant yells.
It takes about half a minute for everyone to finally stop shooting at nothing.
"Well, that was exciting." Megan states to no one in particular.
