Clair's P.O.V

Senior year of high school

I fluff out my brown hair, my finger combing through the smooth curls. My hair is perfectly styled today, ready for school and for tonight. Zach has no idea what's in store for us tonight, what's going to be our lives after tonight. I feel awful about deceiving Ben, but sneaking around is the only way to see Zach.

Downstairs in the kitchen, I grab a piece of toast and some water before rushing down the hallway. "Love you guys! Don't wait up for me!" I close the front door behind me, my bag heavy on my back. Soon enough high school will be over, and then I'll be off to way better things.

Leslie and Becca are in their car in front of my house, the horn honking so that I'll rush over. I take my signature shotgun seat in the car, Becca driving the car down the road. The radio hums whatever pop song is popular at the moment, my head swaying to the sound.

"Don't just sit there in silence! Tell us about tonight's plans," Leslie teases from the backseat. I roll my eyes, not really sure if I even want to bring it up. Zach and I are going to roll with the punches tonight, and I'm betting it's going to feel explosive.

"A true lady never tells," I say, giggling. Becca groans in the driver's seat as she continues to drive us to school. We talk about some of our upcoming last projects, the whole thought of high school ending causing all of us to talk about memories.

It is crazy to think that we're already graduating, that soon enough we won't be the three girls that clung to each other during the first day. Of course, we were able to make better friend groups later on, but I'm just happy that I got to keep them around. I think we plan on being friends until death, until we're ninety and still having sleepovers.

Soon enough, Becca pulls into her parking space at school, a spot right next to Zach's car on purpose. Some mornings we're lucky to see him jump out of his car, to watch him meet up with his other friends. There's just something about his mannerisms that feels like fire. It burns deep within, but also cools me down. He's got my heart; he always has.

"There he is," Leslie bumps her hip into my side. The three of us lace our arms within each other's, the three of us walking into school as we always do. We're popular, but we aren't the stupid kind of popular people see in movies. We don't aim to be mean or all-powerful. We're just trying to bring smiles to people's faces.

Ben winks at me as we pass his locker, my heart dropping at what I'm about to do tonight. Ben has always been second choice, but even I know he deserves someone better than me. He doesn't deserve to be cheated on, to wait for me while I go and fantasize about another guy.

"Don't think about it. Just see how tonight goes," Becca rubs my arm. I look over at her and release a deep breath, hoping that my nerves will calm about the whole situation. I've never been the type to cheat, but Zach has me doing all kinds of sinful things that I never thought were capable in this town.
