"What?" I pushed aside my red blanket, swinging my legs over the side of my bed and standing up. Brynne was only a couple inches taller than me.
"Kate is here!" she whisper yells at me. I look out the window and see the stars winking back at me.
"The sun isn't even up yet!" I grab some clothes and get changed. Brynne grumbles a few choice words, complaining about how little sleep she got. I run a brush through my hair.
"Well, there's no better time than the present to face an angry Suc." I open my door and we walk out.
Kate is sitting in one of the love seats in the living room. She's filing her nails into points like a cat's. Her slitted pupils glance toward us.
"Why are you still here? We have vampires to catch." Kate stood up, sliding the file into her back pocket. Her dark hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, swishes behind her.
"We? As in the three of us?" Brynne doesn't look convinced.
"Yes, the three of us. Do your doggy thing and sniff 'em out." She pushes past us and heads toward the front door. I inwardly laugh as Brynne's face contorts angrily.
"Yea, come on doggy, time to use that sniffer of yours." I duck under her fist and follow after Kate. She's tall and thin like a stick but she is anything but weak. Her skin is the color of a fresh bruise and has intricate pink flowers along her collar bones. She could probably bench me, if I'm being completely honest.
An hour later and we're in the middle of a small neighborhood.
"Nice choice for a hideout. I expected an abandoned cemetery or cave." Brynne kicks at the sidewalk her hands shoved into her pockets.
"A cemetery? It's obviously those fiction books you have your nose stuffed in all the time." Kate mumbles the last part to herself and Brynne glares at her. I glance down the street as an apple red mustang pulls onto the street.
"How long does that stuff last again?" Brynne pops her head behind Kate and raises both eyebrows.
"Awhile, we'll have time to be in and out undetected." I glance back at the decor that could've come straight from one of those magazines no one ever cares to read, but somehow they're everywhere. Kate rolls her eyes.
"I still can't believe you broke into these poor peoples' home. We could've been storming the castle already." she slumps against the wall, examining her perfectly manicured nails.
"Look." I point across the street. Brynne's mouth snaps shut and she watches as something gets out of the car. It looks too big to fit into the car and is bending over like it was just sucker punched in the stomach. The body sticks out in odd places and its skin is a dark yellow-green.
"Fuck!" Kate ducks below the window and we close the dark orange curtains.
"Explain please." Brynne crosses her arms and tries to look tough but the worry in her eyes betrays her.
"Well, uh it's a long story." she closes her eyes and takes a deep breathe, "That is a Reclid, they have a thing against Succubi and Incubi alike. I don't remember why and I wasn't ever expecting to run into one." She waves her hand dismissively and we watch the hunched creature limp into the large house. I walk over to the duffel bag sitting on the kitchen table. I sort through the contents, pulling out weapons, poisons, and potions from our neighborhood coffee shops. The potions, I mean, not the poisons and weapons. The witches would not risk doing that in broad daylight. Brynne joins me and we start strapping the weapons to us, obviously hiding them. Kate soon joins us and pulls a few silver and bronze colored vials from her pocket. She puts them between her hands and rolls them before putting them back into her pocket. When we're armed I collapse the duffel bag. It closes in on itself and disappears with a small popping sound. Now to get into the house.
We sneak in through the third floor window. Brynne and I can hear them talking on the next floor. We seem to be in a guest room. The pillows are a nice white and the duvet is a soft blue. I hear the padding of feet against the floor accompanied by the sound of nails clicking against the floor.
Shit! We take our places and I can hear growling outside the door. Kate's eyes widen as the door slowly opens, creaking as it go. The door swings toward me so I'm now standing behind it. A big ass black paw steps into the room and I tense up. A snout is the next thing that shows up. I hold my breathe and reach for the dagger at my side. As soon as my hand touches the hilt its head snaps toward me.
