                                                   Chapter 5

                                                     A Lie

“Now,” Magdalena sits in a single sofa in my room, “tell me the truth.”

“Like I said, I can’t and I won’t,” I tell her, sitting down across from her, “I’m sorry.”

“Me too,” she sighs, robbing her temple.

“But tell me,” I say shyly, “what happened with Prince Kaiden and Lady Cailin?”

“Oh, so you won’t tell me your secret but I have to tell you my brothers’?”

“You said I would find out anyways,” I remind her, “I could just go and ask my father. I’m sure he’ll know.”

“Alright, alright,” Magdalena sighs, “she lied.”

I raise my eyebrows at her, “she lied?”

“Yes,” she nods, “she wasn’t the girl he slept with. She wasn’t even pregnant!”

“How did he find out?”

“He walked in on her and her lover,” I gasp out loud, “mere days before the royal wedding.”

“No!”

“He was completely heartbroken,” she continues, “Not only was she with another men, but her belly, which should had been showing the five months of pregnancy she was supposed to have, was completely plain. She had been putting a fake pregnancy belly on. Her plan was to fake a miscarriage after they were married.”

“That must have been a scandal.”

“It was!” She nods in agreement, “but you should have seen him. He was so excited with the whole thing, the wedding and the baby. And it all came crumbling down. So sad.”

I place my eyes on the ground as I ask the question “was he in love with her?”

It takes a moment for Magdalena to answer; I even have to look up at her to make sure she heard me, “no. I think he was in love with the idea of being in love.”

“Oh,” I simply say, trying not to show that my heart was beating faster, and that in the inside I was happy about it.

“But the sadness and disappointment he felt that day was nothing compare to what we all felt when we found out you left,” she says and I sigh, she just had to bring it back up.

“I’m sure Kaiden wasn’t that upset,” I lean back on my sofa, “I bet he was even glad. He always found me annoying.”

Magdalena gives me a grim look, proving that I was right, “I must admit, at first he was.”

“At first?”

“Yeah, but after a while he seemed to miss you,” she tells me, “every time your parents would come, he would look around, as if expecting you to show up. He looked like he felt bad about something. Like he blamed himself for your leave.” My silence has her gasping, “Was it his fault? I’d kill him!”

“No!” I stand up, “If you want to blame someone, you should blame my mother. I gave her a choice. I told her all she had to do was say stay and I would. And she didn’t. She wanted me to leave, so I did.”

“But your mother loves you.”

“Ha! Right,” I roll my eyes, sitting back down, “that’s the front she probably put. What did she say? Did she say I ran away? That she went up to my room and found me gone?”

“Yeah, she did,” Magdalena nods, her eyebrows coming down in a frown, “why would she lie?”

At that moment there’s a knock on the door, “come in.”

A maid opens the door, and steps inside the room, bowing down slightly she says, “tea is ready.”

To say tea was uncomfortable would be an understatement.

My mother didn’t lose one minute without trying to insult me, even laughing out loud when I answered the queen about my career choice. Of course, being the best friend she is, Magdalena defended me, saying, and I quote “She must be doing well with it, seeing as she has managed to spend seven year without needing anything from you.” This made my mother quiet down and drink her tea in silence.

Prince Kaiden, on the other hand, remained quiet, but his unweaving stare made me uncomfortable.

By midday, I was tired of the people surrounding me.

“I should go and see father,” I stand up from my seat in between Magdalena and Prince Natalio, “he is the reason why I am here after all.”

“How long will you be staying?” Prince Natalio asks from his seat, slightly turned around to face me.

“End of summer at the latest,” I reply, moving away from the group.

“But you will visit again, won’t you?” Magdalena asks, forcing me to turn around, “it’s the least you can do after being gone for seven years.”

“Unless she wants to wait another seven years before coming back,” Prince Kaiden speaks for the first time since we regrouped.

“That is if she doesn’t get married before then,” everyone tenses up at Magdalena’s words, “I’m sure she would invite us to her own wedding.”

“Of course,” I smile at her.

“Besides,” Magdalena continues, “things work two ways. Just like she can come visit us, we can go visit her, right Lynn?”

“Right.” I close my eyes for a second, “I’ll go see father now.”
